We are seeking an experienced medical coder with expertise in Orthopedic coding to join our team. This position will be in our corporate office in Schaumburg, Il and is responsible for the review of physician documentation to identify appropriate ICD10CM diagnosis, CPT-4 coding for billing purposes for services performed in both in-patient/out-patient hospital/ASC settings as well as coding for our ASC. This individual will also be responsible for the review of charges entered by our physicians in the practice management system, reviewing claim scrub edits, working any coding related rejections and denials. This position is responsible for monitoring the quality of coding entered by our physicians and must stay current on professional coding changes related to orthopedics, compliance issues, billing, documentation, reimbursement and interpretation of coding/documentation rules.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Use extensive coding knowledge to append CPT and/or ICD10 codes to services rendered as interpreted from physician documentation
Add necessary modifiers and append diagnosis pointers to rendered services
Review and work necessary coding edits to ensure clean claim processing
Communicate regularly with the registration team, provider team and other members of the revenue cycle team
Review and respond to payer denials and submit formal appeals on denied coding related services
Adhere to coding rules for coding professional services related to general ortho, spine and pain management.
Ensure all coded procedures are billed prior to close of the financial period.
Minor charge entry of ancillary services into the PM system
Supports physicians, leadership and management with coding and documentation related questions which may require use of research or other coding tools
Demonstrates an awareness of legal/confidentiality issues and adheres to all HIPAA Privacy and Security and Department Policies and Procedures.
Perform other duties assigned which may include; assisting physicians with coding questions, assist in developing policies, guidelines or other documents in order to facility complete and timely gathering of information for clinical, billing or coding. Education and Requirements
Certified Coding Certification (CPC or RHIT)
Certification must be current AND maintain current certification during employment
Minimum 5 years as an active certified coder
Minimum 3 years of orthopedic surgical coding experience
Prior experience in professional coding setting/physician office setting preferred.
Basic computer skills including the ability to search for work related items online using the internet.
Knowledge of standard office equipment.
Proficiency with medical billing systems White Plume, ModMed and SIS a plus but not required
Knowledge/understanding of medical terminology and anatomy.
Knowledge of
ICD9/10CM
diagnosis coding, CPT-4 coding and HCPCS coding guidelines.
Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills, both verbally and in writing.
Uses appropriate organization/priority setting skills to complete work timely and accurately.
Practices effective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sound decision making.
Demonstrates interpersonal skills required to work with many other people and personalities.
Requires the ability to use sound judgement, based upon the latest guidelines, federal and state statutes and regulations, as well as hospital and departmental policies.
