Overview
JOB SUMMARY
The Unit Secretary, reporting to the Nursing Unit Director, with assignment and direction from the Charge Nurse or Registered Nurse/LVN designee, is responsible for assisting in the planning, implementing and evaluating the activities occurring in the nursing station by performance of clerical/ receptionist &/or Cardiac Monitoring duties. This position is responsible for maintaining the physical environment of the nursing unit. The US supports the hospital mission and vision with emphasis on customer relations. The US utilizes knowledge of patient's age, spiritual and cultural diversity into unit communication & organization. The US is a non-licensed position whose training & skills enables him/her to interpret basic cardiac rhythms, recognize & alert the RN to significant rhythm changes or common dysrhythmias. The position contributes to the provision of safety and quality care that result in positive outcomes in patient care.
Responsibilities Administrative & Clerical Support:
Provide essential administrative support to ensure smooth daily unit operations, including preparing patient lists, accurately handling documentation, and performing daily clerical assignments efficiency.
Patient Information & Chart Management:
Maintain, assemble, title, and thin patient medical charts accurately; ensure correct patient identification on all forms, log diagnostic records, and process patient charges accurately.
Interprofessional Communication:
Act as a welcoming receptionist for the nursing unit, managing phone calls, answering inquiries, promptly notifying departments of STAT orders or requests, and facilitating smooth scheduling for external services and transfers.
Inventory & Unit Organization:
Maintain a well-supplied, clean, and organized nursing station by monitoring inventory levels, ordering supplies cost-effectively, verifying deliveries, and maintaining unit communication boards.
Shift Handover & Reporting:
Participate actively in start-of-shift and end-of-shift reports to ensure seamless continuity of care, effective team coordination, and timely escalation of clinical concerns to nursing staff.
Qualifications Education, Experience & Qualifications Education:
High School Graduate or equivalent experience preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year of acute care hospital experience preferred.
Certifications:
Current Basic Life Support (CPR) AHA certification.
Skills:
Competent in Medical Terminology and clerical communication.
