Orange County Cataract and Glaucoma is a busy, patient-focused ophthalmology practice seeking a motivated and dependable Medical Scribe / Ophthalmic Technician to join our team. The primary role will be working directly with the physician as a medical scribe, with additional cross-training in ophthalmic technician duties, diagnostic testing, and imaging. Previous ophthalmology, optometry, medical assisting, or scribing experience is preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate who is intelligent, motivated, organized, and eager to learn. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working closely with patients and physicians and wants to develop meaningful clinical skills in a fast-paced ophthalmology practice. Responsibilities Accompany the physician during patient examinations and accurately document histories, examination findings, assessments, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record Document physician-patient encounters accurately and efficiently in real time Assist with preparation and completion of patient charts Review and update medications, medical history, and relevant patient information Work closely with the physician and clinical team to maintain efficient patient flow Cross-train as an ophthalmic technician, including visual acuity testing, patient histories, medication reconciliation, intraocular pressure measurements, and ophthalmic workups Learn and perform ophthalmic diagnostic testing and imaging, which may include OCT, visual field testing, fundus photography, corneal topography, biometry, and other specialized testing Provide patients with a friendly, professional, and welcoming experience Assist physicians and staff with other clinical duties as needed Maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA and office policies Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree preferred Previous experience in ophthalmology, optometry, medical assisting, medical scribing, or another healthcare environment is preferred but not required Strong computer skills and ability to learn new technology and software quickly Fast and accurate typing skills Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail while simultaneously listening to physician-patient conversations and entering information into the EMR in real time Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills Strong time-management and multitasking abilities Ability to remain composed and productive in a busy, fast-paced clinical environment Strong interpersonal and customer-service skills Professional, dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team Comfortable interacting with patients of all ages, including elderly patients Clear and professional communication skills Willingness and ability to learn ophthalmic terminology, examination techniques, diagnostic testing, and clinical workflows Reliable transportation and dependable attendance required Spanish-speaking/bilingual candidates are strongly preferred but not required Experience with Modernizing Medicine / ModMed / EMA is a plus but not required Our Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who is: Smart, motivated, and eager to learn Detail-oriented and accurate Comfortable with computers and technology A quick learner who retains new information Able to anticipate what needs to be done rather than always waiting for direction Calm and professional under pressure Friendly, compassionate, and patient-centered Able to work efficiently without sacrificing accuracy Interested in developing long-term clinical skills Reliable and interested in becoming an important member of our team Schedule Full-time preferred Part-time candidates with consistent and substantial availability will also be considered Daytime weekday schedule Exact schedule will be discussed based on practice needs and candidate availability Compensation $20-$24 per hour, depending on experience, ophthalmic skills, and qualifications.
