Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Medication Aide's job is to administer oral and topical medications to residents. The Medication Aide performs these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with Federal and State rules and regulations, and consistent with facility policies. The Medication Aide also performs routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, safety, comfort and wellbeing of the residents.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with Federal and State regulations and consistent with facility policy. Is knowledgeable about and assures compliance with all company policies. Demonstrates knowledge of the "six rights" of medication administration. Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately. Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse on the appropriate shift. Takes and records vital signs of residents as assigned or as required by certain medications. Administers PRN medications in accordance with Federal and State regulations and consistent with facility policy. Documents reasons for a response to PRN medications in a timely manner. Properly secures medication carts/medication rooms per Federal and State regulations Assist in answering call lights when not passing medications. Attends facility education in-services.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
Makes observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse or Charge Nurse on the shift. Supervises nursing assistants as assigned by the Charge Nurse. Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS A
current state certification as a nursing assistant is required. A current state approved medication administration certification is required. Complete familiarity with duties f a certified nursing assistant. Highly developed observation skills are desirable. Functional literacy in English is required. Push/pull medication cart for extended periods as required in the facility. Must be able to perform moderate to heavy lifting. Tolerance, patience, empathy and concern is required.
