Position Purpose:

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides structured support, safety oversight, and therapeutic engagement for clients undergoing treatment for substance use disorders, mental health conditions, and/or eating disorders in a residential or detox setting. BHTs are front-line staff responsible for monitoring client activities, managing safety protocols, documenting client behavior and progress, and reinforcing treatment plans designed by clinical and medical teams. This role requires strong interpersonal skills, emotional resilience, and the ability to respond calmly and All duties are to be performed in accordance with Florida DCF Chapter 65D-30 standards, AHCA requirements, Joint Commission accreditation guidelines, HIPAA/42 CFR Part 2 privacy laws, and internal Remedy Therapy policies and procedures.

Qualifications/Position Requirements:

Education:

No minimum education requirement. A Bachelor's degree is preferred; however, equivalent industry experience and demonstrated job knowledge will be considered in lieu of formal education.

Experience:

1+ year experience in a behavioral health, detox, or residential care setting preferred.

Certification/Licensure:

Valid Florida Driver's License with clean driving record (if responsible for client transport). CPR and First Aid certification (required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire). Preferred - Certified Behavioral Health Technician (CBHT);Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.

Time of Hire:

Knowledge of 12-Step Programs, SMART Recovery, and/or other like programs. Working knowledge of behavioral health disorders, trauma-informed care, and substance withdrawal symptoms. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to maintain professional boundaries and manage difficult interpersonal interactions. Computer literacy and ability to use electronic health records (KIPU experience a plus). Physical ability to stand, walk, lift 50+ pounds, and remain alert throughout shift

Employment Classification:

Full-time, Part-time (per diem) Hourly. (Full-time flexible scheduling may be required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays).

Position Specific Competencies:

• Conduct scheduled and ad hoc room and bag/belongings searches in accordance with organizational protocols and management direction.
• Administer CLIA-waived and other point-of-care diagnostic tests, including but not limited to pregnancy tests, urine drug screens, and breathalyzer assessments.
• Accurately obtain, document, and interpret vital signs—such as blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation, and pulse—promptly reporting any abnormal or critical values to appropriate clinical personnel. Complete thorough, objective shift notes documenting client behavior, engagement, compliance with treatment, and any incidents
• Know and maintain professional communication skills: verbal, written, and non-verbal communication
• Understand and maintains the highest level of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) standards

Position Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks:

Core:

• Provide continuous observation of clients in accordance with prescribed observation levels (e.g., 15-minute checks, 1:1 monitoring, meal supervision)
• Supervise clients during all scheduled activities including meals, group therapy, recreation, medical appointments, and sleep hours
• Conduct routine room checks and bed checks during shifts to ensure client safety and accountability
• Monitor for signs of self-harm, substance withdrawal, disordered eating behavior, elopement risk, and other behavioral concerns
• Document and immediately report any behavioral incidents, safety concerns, or unusual client activity to clinical and nursing staff
• Build rapport with clients using trauma-informed, non-judgmental communication techniques
• Provide emotional support and redirect clients during moments of dysregulation or crisis
• Facilitate or co-facilitate structured recovery activities (e.g., journaling, mindfulness, leisure, peer-led groups) under direction of clinical leadership
• Model healthy communication, boundaries, and life skills to support client recovery
• Accurately enter documentation into the electronic medical record (e.g., KIPU) in real time or within facility timeframes
• Record vital signs, monitor symptoms of withdrawal, and report physical/mental status concerns to nursing staff
• Maintain and update logs including observation rounds, contraband searches, incident reports, fire drills, and client passes
• Intervene in behavioral escalations using approved crisis prevention and intervention strategies (e.g., CPI, TCI)
• Maintain safety during client crises by removing triggers, creating calm space, and calling for assistance when needed
• Assist licensed staff in implementing safety interventions including safety contracts, observation protocols, or removal of unsafe items
• Participate in internal reviews or debriefings following client crises or critical incidents
• Maintain structure and order in the therapeutic milieu by reinforcing schedules, boundaries, and program rules
• Lead or assist with wake-ups, room checks, hygiene reminders, meal supervision, and curfew enforcement
• Escort clients on facility-approved passes, appointments, and recreational outings, ensuring safety and compliance at all times
• Set up and maintain clean, welcoming, and safe group rooms and client common areas
• Ensure adherence to all applicable policies set by the facility, Department of Children and Families (DCF), Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), and Joint Commission (TJC)
• Assist in maintaining compliance during audits and surveys through accurate documentation and professional conduct
• Follow confidentiality, HIPAA, and client rights standards at all times
• Participate in shift reports, treatment team meetings, and supervision as scheduled
• Communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses, and supervisors to share observations or concerns about clients
• Support new team members through peer mentoring, modeling, and cross-training as appropriate
