JOB DESCRIPTION
This is a professional position responsible for providing healthcare services to students through University Health Services under the supervision of a physician. Responsible for conducting complete physicals and providing treatment and patient education. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director of Health Services Operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree from an accredited nurse practitioner program is required No direct experience is required. Experience in gynecology is preferred. License by the Texas Board of Nursing to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) is required. Candidates without a current Texas license will be considered if license can be obtained prior to start date.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides healthcare services to students through the outpatient student health clinic. Makes diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of patients, collaborating and/or consulting with medical staff as appropriate. Provides patients with information regarding medications, treatments, anticipated outcomes, and referrals. Assesses, diagnoses, and treats minor injuries and illnesses. Orders and interprets laboratory tests. Prescribes medication with prescriptive authority delegated by the supervising physician. Evaluates athletes for medical conditions that would prevent athletic participation. Obtains, compiles, and records patients' medical data legibly and in a timely manner. Assists supervising physician with ensuring that protocols, authorizations, and chart reviews are up to date and in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and guidelines. Maintains professional atmosphere, confidentiality of medical records, and compassion for each patient.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists with community outreach as requested, including but not limited to health presentations. Provides interviews for students on pre-approved health topics. Supervises nursing students for clinical rotations. Serves on university committees as assigned. May meet with pharmaceutical representatives. Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university and departmental policies, procedures, and protocols. Knowledge of nursing techniques, principles, and procedures. Knowledge of methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment. Knowledge of the area of gynecology. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, policies, procedures, and guidelines established by professional organizations and/or governing agencies. Skill in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Skill in the use of medical diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment. Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software. Ability to communicate in both oral and written form. Ability to examine, diagnose, and treat physical and mental disorders. Ability to conduct and interpret routine laboratory tests. Ability to obtain and maintain licensure as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) in the State of Texas. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
