Job Description
Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Make an impact in the lives of students by sharing your expertise as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist. You'll have the opportunity to foster confidence and independence in learners who are visually impaired, supporting their growth in a rewarding school environment on a contract basis.
Desired Qualifications:
Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or equivalent credential. Demonstrated experience working with children or youth who are blind or visually impaired. Solid understanding of assessments and instructional strategies for orientation and mobility. Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, families, and other service providers. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Adaptability, creativity, and a student-centered mindset. Familiarity with technology and devices supporting navigation for visually impaired students is a plus.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct orientation and mobility assessments for students with visual impairments. Develop and implement individualized instructional programs focused on safe and efficient travel skills. Teach students to use mobility aids, orientation skills, and technology to navigate school and community environments confidently. Provide consultative support and training for teaching staff and families to reinforce mobility skills. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including IEP planning and review sessions. Document progress and maintain accurate records per school and state guidelines. Stay current with best practices and continuing education in orientation and mobility services.
