Job Description
Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Step into a pivotal role supporting students' independence and mobility needs within a school environment as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist. This contract opportunity offers meaningful, part-time work along the picturesque Southeast Texas Coast, where your expertise is uniquely valued due to a significant regional shortage of certified professionals. You will collaborate with district staff and administration, starting in early August and extending through the end of May. Expect flexible scheduling with an estimated 20 hours per week. As the only specialist assigned, your impact will be direct and deeply appreciated, with detailed caseloads and assignments to be finalized following upcoming district meetings.
Qualifications & Experience:
Must hold active OMS (Orientation and Mobility Specialist) Certification AVCREP Certification (or similar) is required Prior experience in school settings or with K-12 populations preferred Strong communication and documentation skills Familiarity with Texas-specific credentialing; must be prepared to complete fingerprinting requirements promptly Adaptability, self-motivation, and a collaborative mindset
Primary Responsibilities:
Assess and develop individualized orientation and mobility programs for visually impaired students Provide direct instructional sessions designed to foster student safety, independence, and confidence Coordinate with educators, families, and district staff regarding student progress and needs Maintain thorough, compliant documentation and progress tracking Working within this role, you'll not only address a crucial, long-standing district need but also gain valuable experience navigating the unique educational landscape in South Texas.
