POSITION SUMMARY

The Physician provides primary and consultative medical care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) served by CSAAC. The Physician works collaboratively with CSAAC's nursing, behavioral health, residential, vocational, educational, and other clinical staff, as well as individuals' families, guardians, and community healthcare providers, to promote continuity of care, health maintenance, disease prevention, and overall well-being. The Physician serves as a medical resource to CSAAC and assists the organization in identifying health-related concerns, recommending appropriate medical interventions, and supporting staff in understanding and responding appropriately to individuals' healthcare needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited medical school. Licensure and Certification Current, unrestricted Maryland medical license. Current DEA registration, if required for the duties of the position. Current CPR/BLS certification, as applicable. Must meet all applicable credentialing and background-check requirements. Experience Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience preferred. Experience treating individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities strongly preferred. Experience managing individuals with complex medical needs preferred. Experience working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Medical Consultation and Evaluation Provides medical consultation for individuals with complex or multiple health conditions. Review medical histories, laboratory results, diagnostic studies, medications, and other relevant medical information. Make referrals to specialists and other healthcare providers when appropriate. Evaluates the effectiveness of treatment plans and recommends modifications as clinically indicated. Identify changes in an individual's medical condition and recommend appropriate intervention. Conduct medical decision-making capacity evaluations for guardianship proceedings to determine an Individual's ability to understand, evaluate and communicate informed decisions regarding medical care. Developmental Disabilities Healthcare Consider communication limitations, behavioral presentations, sensory issues, mobility limitations, and other factors that may affect the individual's ability to communicate symptoms or participate in treatment. Assist in identifying health conditions that may present atypically in individuals with developmental disabilities. Collaborate with caregivers and direct support professionals to obtain relevant information regarding changes in an individual's health or behavior. Provide guidance regarding appropriate medical responses to changes in an individual's condition. Support person-centered healthcare practices that respect the individual's dignity, preferences, rights, and autonomy. Medication Management Review medication regimens and evaluate medication effectiveness and potential adverse effects. Identify potential medication interactions, contraindications, and other medication-related concerns. Make medical recommendations and changes within the scope of professional practice and applicable regulations. Collaborate with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals regarding medication management. Provide medical documentation as appropriate. Collaboration with Nursing and Clinical Staff Serve as a medical resource to CSAAC's nursing and clinical staff. Consult with nurses regarding individuals experiencing changes in medical condition. Provide guidance regarding medical emergencies and other significant health concerns. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings when medically necessary or appropriate. Collaborate with behavioral health professionals when medical conditions may contribute to behavioral changes. Provide consultation to staff regarding health-related concerns within the Physician's scope of practice. Educate staff regarding general medical conditions, warning signs, preventive care, and appropriate escalation of medical concerns. Emergency Care Evaluation Provide recommendations to staff regarding appropriate emergency response. Follow up, when appropriate, following hospitalization, emergency department visits, or significant medical events. Assist in developing recommendations to reduce avoidable emergency department visits and hospitalizations when clinically appropriate. Preventive Healthcare Promote preventive healthcare practices for individuals served by CSAAC. Monitor compliance with recommended routine medical screenings and examinations. Recommend appropriate immunizations and preventive interventions. Identify health risks and recommend strategies to reduce those risks. Promote wellness and healthy lifestyle practices appropriate to each individual's abilities and needs. Documentation and Compliance Maintain timely, accurate, and complete medical documentation. Maintain confidentiality of protected health information and other confidential information. Comply with applicable federal and Maryland laws, regulations, professional standards, licensing requirements, and CSAAC policies and procedures. Maintain appropriate documentation regarding medical assessments, recommendations, and follow-up. Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement activities related to healthcare services, as appropriate. Consultation and Organizational Support Provide medical consultation regarding health-related issues affecting individuals served by CSAAC. Assist CSAAC leadership in identifying healthcare trends, recurring medical concerns, and opportunities for improved health outcomes. Provide recommendations regarding health and safety practices when requested. Participate in the development or review of healthcare-related policies and procedures, as appropriate. Provide consultations regarding medical considerations related to residential, educational, vocational, and community-based services. Assist with reviewing significant medical incidents or health-related events when requested. Participate in meetings with families, guardians, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders when medically appropriate. Person-Centered Care The Physician is expected to provide care in a manner that: Respects the dignity, rights, privacy, and individuality of every person served. Promotes maximum independence and participation in healthcare decisions. Uses understandable communication appropriate to the individual's abilities. Includes the individual, family, guardian, and/or authorized representative in healthcare decisions as appropriate. Recognizes the importance of informed consent and individual choice. Promotes equitable access to healthcare.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain an active and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Maryland. Maintain current professional credentials, certifications, and required continuing medical education. Practice within the scope of licensure, education, training, and professional competence. Maintain professional relationships with CSAAC employees, individuals served, families, guardians, and community healthcare providers. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times. Participate in required organizational training. Comply with CSAAC's policies and procedures and applicable Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) requirements. Maintain current knowledge of healthcare practices relevant to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Ability to collaborate effectively with nurses, direct support professionals, behavioral health professionals, families, guardians, and other healthcare providers. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive medical information appropriately.
