SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST SUMMARY

The purpose of the school psychologist is to assess students' intellectual and functional levels; to develop behavior plans; to provide information on child development issues to school personnel and parents; to collaborate with community agencies regarding individual student plans; and to provide recommendations for program development and student placement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assesses students' functional capabilities and home and/or classroom environment for the purpose of determining student's functional level and developing recommendations and/or placement. Communicates with students and/or parents, with teachers and/or other personnel for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems and/or resolving conflicts. Consults with teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans for services and/or making recommendations. Coordinates with community agencies including medical, judicial, social services and mental health services for the purpose of determining appropriate treatments, etc. to meet the needs of specific students. Counsels students, parents and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success in school. Facilitates meetings, processes, etc. for the purpose of meeting curriculum guidelines and/or ensuring that state mandates are achieved. Implements school-wide program development and program evaluation (e.g. crisis intervention services, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring effective programs to assist children who experience physical, mental, social, or emotional difficulties. Intervenes in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for the purpose of assisting students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills. Manages assigned special grants and/or projects (e.g. budget, reports, goals, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that specifications are achieved. Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars as assigned, for the purpose of accomplishing the objective of the position and for professional growth. Performs other related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position. Prepares a wide variety of written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information. Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students' functional goals.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of subject matter/course content and resources relevant to assignment. Knowledge of and skills in using effective instructional strategies and practices Knowledge of and skills in administering, scoring and interpreting academic and behavior assessments, including Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) Knowledge and understanding of child development and disability Skills in managing and promoting positive student behavior. Skills in data analysis to assess, monitor, and inform instruction for student growth Skills and abilities in organization, time management, and record keeping. Skills with computers, including a broad range of assistive technology resources. Ability to work independently. Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable board policies and district and legal requirements. Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations. Ability to operate a computer and the skills to learn and utilize software and other technology in instruction Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with other professionals in a team setting. Ability to interact positively and effectively with parents, students, staff, and administrators. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical Abilities include the usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions and require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching; reaching, handling, touching and/or feeling; manual dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer. Significant physical abilities include ability to sit at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations for extended periods of time; see and read, with or without visual aids, laws and codes, rules, policies and other printed matter, computer screens and printouts; hear and understand speech at normal room levels and hear and understand speech on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Employees in this position will be required to work mostly indoors in classroom environments and come in direct contact with district staff and the public.
