Overview Unit Description:
NICU:
- The level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a new 15-bed unit.
- The NICU can care for very preterm, 28 weeks gestation, to term infants that require additional support.
- The range of medical conditions include but are not limited to respiratory support, feeding assistance, neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, glucose instability, and antibiotic therapy.
- NICU RNs attend all high-risk deliveries and assist with initial assessments as needed.
- Staff RNs provide evidence-based care and place special emphasis on skin-to-skin, breastfeeding, and safe sleep practices.
Responsibilities Deliver comprehensive nursing care to neonates in the NICU, including monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and managing ventilators and IV infusions. Perform detailed patient assessments, including physical examinations and physiological evaluations, to identify urgent needs and respond swiftly. Utilize advanced EMR (Electronic Medical Records) systems such as Epic or Cerner to document patient information accurately and efficiently. Implement neonatal resuscitation procedures and neonatal ventilator management to stabilize critically ill newborns. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—pediatricians, respiratory therapists, and specialists—to develop and execute individualized care plans. Maintain strict aseptic techniques during procedures such as suturing, catheterization, and specimen collection to prevent infections. Educate families on neonatal care practices, including tube feeding, medication administration, and developmental support strategies. Requirements Valid RN license with current state certification; prior NICU or neonatal ICU experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated proficiency with EMR/EHR systems like Epic or Cerner; experience with medical documentation standards such as ICD-10 coding is advantageous. Strong knowledge of neonatal physiology, respiratory support equipment (ventilators), and critical care procedures including neonatal resuscitation protocols. Experience working with vulnerable populations such as premature infants or neonates with complex medical needs is highly desirable. Ability to perform high-level assessments quickly in emergency situations involving acute pain management or trauma medicine. Familiarity with infection control practices, sterile processing techniques, and aseptic procedures essential for neonatal safety. Excellent communication skills to coordinate effectively within multidisciplinary teams and provide compassionate family education.
