Job Description
Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, part of Encompass Health, is seeking a Speech Pathologist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this role, you will assess, diagnose, and treat patients with communication and swallowing disorders, developing individualized treatment plans that support optimal rehabilitation outcomes. You will collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team, educate patients and families, and document progress in accordance with regulatory and hospital standards. Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing evaluations using standardized and functional assessment tools. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings, patient goals, and evidence-based practice. Provide direct therapeutic interventions for communication and swallowing disorders to adult and geriatric patients in an inpatient rehabilitation setting. Document evaluations, daily treatment notes, progress reports, and discharge summaries accurately and promptly in the electronic medical record. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, case managers, and other team members to coordinate integrated, patient-centered care plans. Educate patients and caregivers on communication strategies, compensatory techniques, safe swallowing practices, and home programs to support carryover and long-term outcomes. Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences and contribute to goal-setting, discharge planning, and recommendations for post-discharge services or equipment. Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state and federal regulations, and professional standards of practice for speech-language pathology. Engage in quality improvement activities, outcome tracking, and implementation of clinical best practices and innovative therapy approaches. Provide mentorship, guidance, or training to students or less experienced staff as appropriate, fostering a culture of clinical excellence and collaboration. Required Skills Speech and language assessment and diagnosis Dysphagia assessment and management Cognitive-communication rehabilitation Voice and motor speech disorder treatment Development and implementation of individualized treatment plans Use of standardized assessment tools Clinical documentation and EMR proficiency Interdisciplinary care coordination Patient and caregiver education Evidence-based practice and outcome measurement Time management and caseload prioritization Knowledge of rehabilitation and neurogenic communication disorders Understanding of regulatory and documentation requirements (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission) Use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies (preferred) Group and individual therapy techniques Professional communication and teamwork
