Job Description
Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, part of Encompass Health, is seeking a Speech Pathologist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this role, you will assess, diagnose, and treat patients with communication and swallowing disorders, developing individualized treatment plans that support optimal rehabilitation outcomes. You will collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team, educate patients and families, and document progress in accordance with regulatory and hospital standards. Responsibilities Perform comprehensive evaluations of speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing function for adult and geriatric patients. Develop and implement individualized, evidence-based treatment plans to address communication and swallowing disorders. Provide dysphagia management, including bedside swallow evaluations and development of safe diet and feeding recommendations. Document evaluations, treatment sessions, progress notes, and discharge summaries accurately and in a timely manner in the electronic medical record. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary rehab team to coordinate care, participate in patient care conferences, and contribute to discharge planning. Educate patients, families, and caregivers on communication strategies, swallowing safety, and home exercise programs. Monitor patient progress, adjust treatment goals and interventions as needed, and advocate for patient needs. Maintain compliance with hospital policies, professional standards, and regulatory/accreditation requirements. Participate in performance improvement, evidence-based practice initiatives, and continuing education to support clinical excellence. Provide mentorship and support to students or new staff as appropriate. Required Skills Speech, language, and cognitive-communication assessment Dysphagia assessment and management Development of individualized treatment plans Neurogenic communication disorder rehabilitation (e.g., aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia) Cognitive-linguistic rehabilitation Use of evidence-based treatment approaches in speech-language pathology Instrumental or clinical swallowing evaluations (as applicable) Patient and family education Interdisciplinary team collaboration Clinical documentation in EMR systems Time management and caseload prioritization Knowledge of rehabilitation and recovery principles for stroke and brain injury Understanding of payer and regulatory documentation standards Professional communication and counseling skills
