JOB SUMMARY:

The Speech-Language Pathology Intern is a graduate student enrolled in an accredited Speech-Language Pathology program completing a supervised school-based internship. Under the direction of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, the intern supports the delivery of assessment, intervention, consultation, and documentation services for students with communication needs. The intern gains hands-on experience working within a collaborative, inclusive public school system serving students ages 3-21 while developing professional competencies required for certification and licensure.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide comprehensive speech-language pathology services to students ages 3 through 21 in accordance with applicable fedral and state lawm including IDEA, Washington Administrative Code (WAC), district policies, and professional standards established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Conduct screenings, comprehensive evaluations, reevaluations, and dynamic assessments to identify communication disorders impacting educational performance. Interpret assessment results and prepare written evaluation reports that clearly communicate educational implications and recommendations. Participate as an active member of multidisciplinary evaluation and Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams. Develop measurable communication goals and specially designed instruction aligned with student needs and educational standards. Provide evidence-based direct and indirect speech-language intervention using a variety of service delivery models, including classroom-based, small group, individual, consultative, and collaborative services. Monitor student progress using data-based decision making and adjust intervention strategies to maximize student outcomes. Support inclusive educational practices by collaborating with educators to embed communication supports within general education environments whenever appropriate. Conduct comprehensive Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) evaluations to determine student communication needs, including feature matching, trials, device selection, and documentation. Develop and implement individualized AAC intervention plans that promote functional communication across educational environments. Collaborate with families, educators, occupational therapists, physical therapists, assistive technology specialists, and outside agencies to ensure successful AAC implementation and carryover across settings. Program, customize, troubleshoot, maintain, and support speech-generating devices and other assistive technology as needed. Train school staff, families, and communication partners in effective AAC implementation, aided language stimulation, communication partner strategies, and device use to promote student participation and independence. Provide consultation and coaching to educators regarding communication strategies, language development, literacy, social communication, classroom accommodations, and communication supports. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, behavior specialists, nurses, and other service providers to support student success across educational settings. Participate in Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) by assisting with prevention, early intervention, progress monitoring, and problem-solving for students with communication needs. Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation including evaluation reports, progress reports, service logs, Medicaid documentation, therapy notes, and IEP records. Complete Medicaid billing and required supporting documentation accurately and within established timelines for eligible services provided in accordance with district, state, and federal requirements. Maintain professional competence through ongoing professional learning and application of current evidence-based practices. Participate in district professional learning communities, department meetings, program development, and continuous improvement initiatives.

NON-ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist other personnel as may be required to support them with the completion of their work activities. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Current enrollment in an accredited Master's program in Speech-Language Pathology. Meets all university and district requirements for placement in a supervised clinical internship in a public school setting. Interest in neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based, and inclusive practices. Bilingual and/or Biliterate (Spanish), preferred but not required. Experience working in a K-12 setting preferred but not required. Experience or interest in school-based speech-language services.

• This internship is designed to fulfill requirements to complete a graduate level Speech Language Pathology program and to obtain certification.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to receive and apply feedback in a growth-oriented professional setting. Willingness to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams including educators, related service providers, and families. Ability to follow directions and guidance from supervising SLP and district leadership. Willingness to learn and accurately use district systems for IEP development, service documentation, and Medicaid billing. Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and commitment to student-centered services. Ability to meet the physical demands of the position. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Knowledge and ability to assess and correct issues involving safety. Ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management. Knowledge of basic computer programs, data entry, and typing. Culturally responsive and equity-minded approach to service delivery.
