Hunt Valley, Owings Mills, Towson, and Bel Air Job Summary The Oral Surgery Assistant helps our surgeons care for patients before, during, and after surgery. This person works closely with patients, doctors, and staff to keep every visit safe, efficient, and comfortable. The role requires hands-on surgical support, frequent communication with patients, and strict attention to safety and cleanliness. Key Responsibilities Patient Care and Communication Greet patients and make sure they feel calm and welcome before, during and after their pre-surgical evaluations and treatment. Review patient health history and confirm consent forms are signed. Take and record vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen level. Taking digital dental radiographs (x-rays/scans) Taking digital impression scans Explain pre/post-operative instructions to patients and caregivers in plain, easy-to-understand language, covering topics like diet, pain management, swelling, and warning signs that need a call to the office. Answer patients' questions with patience and professionalism, escalating clinical questions to the surgeon when needed. Educate patients on treatment plans. Teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health. Knowledge of practice software functions. Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments and equipment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with surgeons. Chairside assisting with doctor during procedures. Prepare treatment rooms and sterilize instruments. Compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment. Manage room turnover efficiently and assist with clinical workflow. Always ensure patient confidentiality. Uphold practice policies including
HIPPA & OSHA.
Surgical Assistance Prepare the operatory before each procedure by setting up sterile instrument trays, surgical supplies, and equipment. Prepare patient for surgical treatment by professional and informative communication welcoming, comforting, seating and draping patient. Assist the surgeon chairside during procedures such as extractions, wisdom tooth removal, dental implant placement, sinus augmentation, bone grafting, biopsies and jaw surgery. Provide retraction and suction to keep the surgical site clear and visible. Pass instruments and materials to the surgeon and anticipate the next step of the procedure. Mix and prepare dental materials, such as bone graft or suture materials, as directed. Monitor patient vital signs and level of sedation during the procedure under the surgeon's direction, and alert the surgeon right away to any changes. Take and process dental X-rays and imaging as needed. Document the procedure accurately in the patient chart. Patient communication that includes but not limited to treatment plan, pre/post op instructions, oral hygiene, and any questions or concerns in regard to their appointment. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care. Ensure patient safety when exiting from your care. Sterilization, Equipment, and Supplies Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments and equipment following infection control standards. Maintain a sterile field throughout each procedure. Monitor inventory levels and restock surgical and dental supplies as needed. Ensure all equipment is in good working order and report any issues right away. Administrative Support Keep patient records, charts, and treatment notes complete and up to date. Follow all HIPAA rules to protect patient privacy at all times. Support scheduling and patient flow to keep the office running on time. Physical Requirements Stand and remain on your feet for several hours at a time during procedures. Frequent bending, reaching, and fine motor movement with hands and fingers. Lift and carry supplies or equipment up to 25 pounds. Wear personal protective equipment, including mask, gloves, gown, and eyewear, for extended periods. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Dental Assistant certification required; or ability to obtain within a set time frame. Radiography certification required, or ability to obtain within a set time frame. Current CPR/BLS certification required, or ability to obtain within a set time frame. Prior experience as a dental assistant preferred; especially in an oral surgery practice Comfortable working with sedation and surgical procedures. Strong communication skills and a calm, caring approach with patients. Reliable, organized, and able to work well as part of a team. Work Environment This role works in a clinical office setting during regular business hours. Some travel between practice locations may be required. The pace can change quickly based on the day's surgical schedule, and the assistant must be ready to always adjust and support the team. Consequently, all assistants are expected to be able to perform all relevant tasks. Equitable distribution of work among assistants is an operational requirement of the practice. $24.00 - $33.00 per hour
