And everyone, in their own unique way, plays an important part, every day. The Supervisor, Ultrasound oversees the day-to-day activities of the Ultrasound area. The Supervisor is responsible for the operation of diagnostic ultrasound equipment for the performance of all dynamic ultrasound imaging procedures at a technical level not requiring direct supervision. I.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities. 2. Recommends and assists in managing budgets for the areas managed. 3. Coordinates the assignment of tasks for the efficient utilization of available resources. 4. Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation. 5. Obtains scans per physician orders in an efficient, timely manner, according to departmental policy and procedures. 6. Prepares, utilizes and operates ultrasound equipment, supplies and rooms according to departmental policies and procedures. 7. Follows sterile techniques according to hospital policy. 8. Checks equipment for proper functioning prior to patient examination. 9. Greets patients politely and efficiently. 10. Clearly explains procedures to patients in English and observes patients to ensure safety and comfort during scan. 11. Seeks out Interpreter Services if needed. 12. Gathers and records patient history. Assesses patients ability to withstand procedure. 13. Obtains, reviews and completes patient consent forms prior to starting procedures. 14. Perform sonographic examinations using equipment and techniques specific to the modality, anatomy, pathology, physiology and area of interest requested. Positions patient on examining table to ensure a quality diagnostic image is produced. 15. Monitors video display of area being scanned and adjusts density or contrast to improve picture quality. 16. Reviews and evaluates images or computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. 17. Dates, labels and marks images accurately and sends to PACS according to departmental policy. 18. Records, processes and maintains patient data. 19. Presents cases to a radiologist for review. 20. Follows all Quality Control policies and procedures for compliance with departmental, local, state and federal regulations. 21. Collaborates with other medical team and administrative staff members, such as physicians and nurses, to conduct special procedures or complete administrative duties. 22. Arranges for scheduled maintenance and minor emergency repairs on ultrasound equipment, or informs manager of problems with equipment or supplies. 23. Performs all duties with strict adherence to and compliance with government regulations, hospital policies and procedures, and safety guidelines. 24. Responsible for overseeing that all staff credentials are up to date. Maintains documentation for continuing education credits, CPR and other training, registration and licensure. 25. Rotates through call schedule as required. 26. Meets established productivity standards. 27. Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments. 28. Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North. 29. The individual must support the mission, vision, and goals of HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital and serve as a role model for CARES values. 30. Adheres to change control processes. 31. Participates in cross training to optimize department resources. 32. Demonstrates excellent attendance and actively participates in a variety of meetings and training sessions as required. 33. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed. 44. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations. 45. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements. 46. Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department. 10. Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. 11. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

1. High school graduate or equivalent. 2. Completion of and graduation from a formal ultrasound technology program in an AMA-approved school. 3. Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or eligible. Must be CPR certified and keep certification current.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

1. Ability to direct, lead and motivate staff. 2. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, basic principles of diagnostic medical ultrasound, patient care and preparation, legal and ethical aspects of ultrasonographic practice, departmental protocols, and diagnostic protocols. 3. Outstanding oral communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to explain procedures and results to patients while keeping them safe, relaxed and comfortable. 4. Strong organizational skills. 5. Ability to keep accurate and detailed written notes for charts and other documentation. 6. Strong mathematical and scientific skills to analyze information. 7. Ability to operate ultrasound scanning equipment and probes. 8. Ability to follow procedures and policies. 9. Ability to process, review and evaluate images or computer generated information to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. 10. Ability to record, process and maintain detailed and accurate patient data, and medical histories. Prepares all documentation in a timely manner. 11. Ability to work effectively collaborate with medical staff, personnel, students, and patients. 12. Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English. 13. A minimum of 4 years clinical ultrasound experience plus lead or supervisory experience. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments.
