University of South Carolina Position Overview We are seeking an experienced, organized, and enthusiastic Assistant Chef to join the culinary team at a large Greek sorority house. The Sous Chef will work closely with the Head Chef to prepare high-quality, nutritious, and appealing meals for a large residential community of college-aged women. This position is ideal for a culinary professional who enjoys a fast-paced environment, takes pride in creating meals from scratch, and understands the importance of consistency, cleanliness, hospitality, and teamwork. The Sous Chef will play a key role in daily meal preparation and service while helping oversee kitchen operations, staff, food safety, and special events. Key Responsibilities Assist the Head Chef with daily kitchen operations, meal planning, preparation, and service. Prepare dinner, desserts, and other meals for a large residential dining program. Execute recipes and menus consistently while maintaining high standards for flavor, presentation, nutrition, and portion control. Supervise and support kitchen staff during preparation, service, and cleanup. Coordinate kitchen workflow to ensure meals are prepared and served on schedule. Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen in accordance with applicable food-safety regulations. Monitor food quality, freshness, temperatures, storage, and proper food-handling procedures. Assist with inventory management, receiving and stocking deliveries, rotation of products, and minimizing food waste. Communicate effectively with the Head Chef, Property Manager, House Corporation, dining staff, and other members of the sorority's leadership team. Help accommodate dietary restrictions, food allergies, and special dietary requests. Train and mentor kitchen employees in food preparation, sanitation, recipes, and proper kitchen procedures. Step into the Head Chef's duties when needed during their absence. Maintain a positive, professional, and respectful environment for both kitchen staff and sorority members. Qualifications 2+ years of professional culinary experience; high-volume institutional, residential, hospitality, restaurant, university, or catering experience preferred. Culinary degree or formal culinary training preferred but not required. Strong knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, sanitation, and kitchen safety. Experience working in a high-volume kitchen or dining environment. Ability to lead and motivate a kitchen team. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to remain calm and effective in a fast-paced environment. Dependable, punctual, and professional. Ability to lift and carry kitchen supplies and stand for extended periods. Food-safety certification, such as ServSafe, preferred or required within a specified period of employment. Preferred Experience Candidates with experience in any of the following are especially encouraged to apply: College or university dining Sorority or fraternity house dining Country clubs or private clubs Hotels and resorts Catering Healthcare or institutional food service High-volume scratch cooking Special-event and banquet preparation Schedule This is a part-time to full-time position with a schedule based on the sorority's meal-service requirements. The schedule may include afternoons, evenings, and special events as needed.
