Custodial and Maintenance Assistant Supervisor:

Head of Maintenance Position Summary The Custodial and Maintenance Assistant is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and functional environment throughout the Susquehanna SPCA shelter, thrift shop, and grounds. This position is primarily focused on custodial and sanitation duties, with secondary responsibilities involving basic facility maintenance, repairs, and grounds upkeep. The Custodial and Maintenance Assistant plays a vital role in supporting animal health, employee safety, and positive visitor experiences through effective cleaning practices and facility maintenance.

Hourly Pay Range:

$16-$19 per hour, depending on experience. Required Skills and Qualifications Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness. Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively. Knowledge of health, safety, sanitation, and disease control practices. Ability to safely handle cleaning chemicals, equipment, and supplies. General maintenance experience or interest in facility upkeep preferred. Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and repair techniques preferred. Ability to safely use hand and power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and visitors. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Valid driver's license preferred. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCustodial and Sanitation Responsibilities Sweep, vacuum, mop, and maintain floors throughout shelter and thrift store facilities. Clean and sanitize tables, chairs, counters, windows, doors, walls, cabinets, and other surfaces. Clean and sanitize restrooms, breakrooms, offices, and common areas. Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash and recyclables. Clean and sanitize all trash and recycling receptacles. Ensure sinks, soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, and other facility supplies remain stocked. Refill facility supplies as needed. Assist with laundry operations. Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify supervisors when supplies need replenishment. Adhere to effective disease control, biosecurity, and sanitation practices. Assist with animal kennel, cage, and litterbox cleaning as needed. Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors. Maintenance and Facility Responsibilities Respond to routine maintenance requests including leaky faucets, broken locks, HVAC concerns, and minor electrical issues. Perform routine inspections of doors, windows, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and facility equipment. Complete minor repairs including plumbing fixes, replacing damaged tiles, adjusting door hinges, and similar maintenance tasks. Assist with facility improvement projects such as painting, mounting shelves, installing fixtures, and other upgrades. Perform minor grounds maintenance and seasonal property upkeep. Organize and maintain tools, equipment, and maintenance supply areas. Assist with larger repair projects under the direction of maintenance staff or contractors. Follow all safety procedures when using tools, ladders, cleaning chemicals, and maintenance equipment. Document completed maintenance tasks and report recurring issues to supervisors. Report facility concerns, maintenance needs, and safety hazards promptly. Assist in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of all shelter buildings and grounds. Other Duties Carry out other duties as assigned by the Executive Director. Attend and participate in staff meetings. Participate in in-service training, projects, and activities as assigned. Adhere to all SQSPCA policies, procedures, and the Employee Handbook. Report any on-the-job injuries to the Executive Director before the end of the work shift on the day the injury occurs. Practice safe work habits when working with equipment, chemicals, tools, and machinery. Provide prompt response to facility-related emergencies. Establish and maintain constructive working relationships with staff, volunteers, visitors, and community members. Maintain confidentiality regarding SQSPCA operations, personnel, and animal-related information. Treat staff, volunteers, and visitors with fairness, professionalism, and respect. Promote the SQSPCA in a positive manner. Support teamwork and organizational goals. Follow and communicate detailed instructions and seek clarification when necessary. Reporting to work under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or other mood-altering substances, or using such substances while on shelter premises, is strictly prohibited. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and climb for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to safely operate cleaning and maintenance equipment. Ability to tolerate exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, animal dander, noise, and odors commonly found in an animal shelter environment.
