The Custodian I is responsible for performing routine cleaning and light maintenance duties to ensure the cleanliness, sanitation, and safety of school buildings and grounds. An employee in this classification is responsible for the cleanliness, neatness, and custodial care of the School Districts schools and properties. Although much of the work is repetitive in nature, the employee must exercise initiative in carrying out responsibilities according to established practices under general supervision. Work is typically performed while the building is occupied and requires the ability to adjust routines to meet changing circumstances and respond to the requests or directions of various building users. Assignments are provided orally or in writing, and work is reviewed by a supervisor during progress or upon completion to ensure that cleanliness standards and instructions are followed.
Illustrative Examples of WorkSweeps, mops, and polishes floors; vacuums rugs and carpets.
Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
Empties wastebaskets and removes trash from the premises.
Washes walls, windows, and blackboards/whiteboards.
Dusts and wipes down tables, desks, windowsills, and other furniture.
Moves, arranges, and sets up furniture, such as tables and chairs, for events or general cleaning.
Operates various custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, polishers, push brooms, and mops.
Performs seasonal snow and ice removal from sidewalks and walkways using hand tools and powered equipment; applies salt or sand to maintain safe, slip-free surfaces.
Locks and unlocks doors and windows; may be required to open or secure the building at assigned times.
Reports the need for repairs or safety hazards to the appropriate personnel.
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Abilities, and SkillsSome knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment, and procedures.
Ability to assume responsibility for the cleanliness and custodial care of a school building.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform a variety of cleaning and custodial duties without close supervision.
Ability to carry and move light loads and to climb ladders.
Ability to operate and properly care for light custodial equipmentAbility to serve a wide variety of building users courteously and efficiently.
Experience and TrainingNo Previous experience required.
On-the-job training will be provided.
Prior custodial experience is helpful but not necessary.
