South Hero School:

Hours 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM\n

Hourly Rate of Pay:

$18.70 - $23.68, based upon experience\nSummary\nThe Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly environment for students, staff, and the public within the assigned school facility. This role involves performing routine and comprehensive cleaning tasks, minor maintenance, and assisting with school activities and events. The ideal candidate is reliable, possesses a strong work ethic, and is committed to supporting a positive and effective learning environment.\nEssential Duties and Responsibilities\n

Cleaning and Sanitation:

\nPerform daily cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and waxing floors in classrooms, hallways, offices, and common areas.\nClean and sanitize restrooms and drinking fountains, ensuring they are stocked with necessary supplies (soap, toilet paper, paper towels).\nEmpty waste receptacles and transport trash to disposal areas.\nClean and wash windows, walls, furniture, and fixtures.\nPerform deep cleaning and stripping/waxing of floors during school breaks and as needed.\n

Safety and Security:

\nEnsure buildings and grounds are secure, locking doors and windows at the end of the shift.\nMonitor facility conditions and report needed repairs or unsafe conditions immediately to the Maintenance Supervisor or Principal.\nAssist in setting up and tearing down equipment for school events, assemblies, and athletic activities.\nRespond to and clean up spills, bodily fluids, and other emergencies, following appropriate safety protocols and using the appropriate equipment.\nClear walkways and entrances of snow, ice, or debris to ensure safe passage.\nComplete required training for performance of job duties.\n

Maintenance and Inventory:

\nPerform minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, tightening screws, and making minor repairs that do not require specialized licensing.\nReceive, store, and manage inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment.\nOperate and maintain standard custodial equipment (e.g., floor buffers, wet vacs).\n

Communication and Teamwork:

\nWork collaboratively with school staff, administration, and other custodians.\nFollow all established safety procedures and utilize protective equipment (PPE) as required.\nQualifications\n

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred. Prior experience in custodial, janitorial, or maintenance work is highly desirable.\n

Skills:

\nKnowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, and equipment.\nAbility to perform medium to heavy physical labor.\nAbility to read and understand written and verbal instructions, including Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).\nAbility to work independently and manage time effectively.\n

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to stand, walk, climb, and reach for extended periods; frequently lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds; and operate heavy cleaning equipment.\n

Other:

Must successfully pass a background check and fingerprinting, as required for school employees.\n
