Merrimack, NH Position Overview The Cooking Program Assistant supports the Lead Cooking Instructor in providing engaging, hands-on cooking experiences for children. This position focuses on preparing and organizing materials, supporting students during cooking activities, maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment, and helping children develop confidence and independence with cooking skills. This role is part of a newly developing (>1 year) and expanding Cooking Program at a Public Chartered School, and requires flexibility and adaptability in a busy, changing school environment that is growing. The Assistant works closely with the Lead Instructor and follows their direction throughout each class while actively engaging with and supporting students. Key Responsibilities Classroom & Student Support Assist the Lead Instructor with hands-on cooking instruction and classroom activities. Support and supervise students throughout cooking classes. Help children safely use cooking tools, equipment, and ingredients. Assist students with cooking techniques and tasks as directed by the Lead Instructor. Encourage children to participate, try new skills, and develop confidence in the kitchen. Support children in developing age-appropriate independence and practical life skills. Provide individual assistance to students who need additional support or guidance. Encourage positive behavior, cooperation, responsibility, and respect for the shared kitchen environment. Help maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment. Follow the Lead Instructor's direction regarding lesson activities, student support, and classroom flow. Preparation & Organization Assist with preparing ingredients, materials, tools, and workstations before each class. Help with ingredient preparation, portioning, measuring, and other tasks as directed. Set up cooking stations and ensure students have the materials they need. Assist with organizing and maintaining kitchen supplies, ingredients, equipment, and storage areas. Help monitor inventory and communicate when supplies or ingredients are running low. Receive and properly store food and supplies when needed. Help ensure food is properly sealed, labeled, and stored. Cleaning & Kitchen Responsibilities Maintain a clean and organized kitchen throughout each class. Clean and sanitize workstations, tools, equipment, and surfaces. Assist with dishes, washing utensils, and putting away equipment and supplies. Clean up between student groups and reset workstations for the next class. Complete end-of-class cleanup and ensure the kitchen and cooking areas are left clean and organized. Follow food safety, cleanliness, and kitchen safety procedures at all times. Stay familiar with student allergies and take care to prevent cross-contamination. Professional Responsibilities Arrive prepared and on time for scheduled shifts. Follow the Lead Instructor's direction and work collaboratively as part of the instructional team. Take initiative to assist with preparation, student needs, and cleanup without needing constant direction. Communicate respectfully and professionally with the Lead Instructor, Learning Nest staff, school personnel, students, and families. Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and school information. Follow all Learning Nest and school policies, safety procedures, and applicable requirements. Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to assist wherever needed to support a successful class. Help create a positive, joyful, and supportive experience for students. Perform other reasonable duties related to the successful operation of the cooking program. Qualifications & Skills Experience working with children and culinary preferred. Interest in cooking, food, education, or hands-on learning. Comfortable working in a busy kitchen environment. Flexibility and problem solving skills. Ability to adapt to a busy, changing environment. Patient, dependable, organized, and attentive to detail. Able to work well with children and encourage independence while providing appropriate support. Able to follow directions while also taking initiative when needed. Strong teamwork and communication skills. Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and positive learning environment. The Cooking Program Assistant is an important member of the instructional team and plays a key role in helping the Lead Instructor create a well-organized, safe, and engaging cooking experience where children can learn, participate, and build independence.
