POSITION SUMMARY

The principal function of an employee in this class is to ensure patron safety within the pool center facility and provide swimming instruction when necessary. An employee in this classification must hold their Head Guard certification. In addition, the employee must maintain certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, WSI, CPR, and First Aid. An employee at this level is qualified to work as a Head Guard. To maintain this class status the employee must be available to teach swimming lessons and be scheduled as a Head Guard when requested. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, members of community service groups, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed at a pool facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervises the work performance of employees in the class of Lifeguard and Lifeguard/Instructor I. Provides swimming instruction to patrons, including demonstrating proper stroke technique and awareness, ensuring safety of children and adults by watching for potential hazards and dangerous situations, and teaching water safety and pool rules. Maintains a clean and safe swimming facility, including clearing pool deck of potentially dangerous objects and vacuuming pool when necessary. Monitors the safety of the pool, including administering First-Aid and CPR when necessary, testing water quality and chemical balance, monitoring pool equipment, and performing minor maintenance repair as required. Performs life-saving and guarding duties, including assisting patrons in life threatening situations, enforcing pool rules and regulations daily for the efficient and safe operation of the pool, providing active accident prevention, and monitoring patrons to make sure they are physically capable to be in the water. Maintains current certifications in all required areas and accepts responsibility for renewing certifications. Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned. Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions. Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas. Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS

High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) Required. 1 plus years of experience in Swimming Instruction and Training or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work. Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology. CPR Certification and First Aid Certification. Lifeguard Certification by the American Red Cross. Water Safety Instructor Certification. Head Guard Certification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Some knowledge of swimming and lifeguard saving techniques. Some knowledge of basic First Aid and CPR. Some knowledge of injury prevention and treatment. Some knowledge of stabilization of victims with spinal cord injuries. Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate the work of others. Ability to remain calm and act in a professional manner at all times. Ability to differentiate between passive and active drowning victims. Ability to patiently instruct individuals on pool and water safety. Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with the general public. Ability to address uncooperative patrons. Ability to swim 500 yards using a variety of swim strokes. Ability to retrieve objects off pool floor in timely manner. Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language and deal with a wide range of persons. Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions, use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions, and prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
