This position is focused primarily on the routine tasks that keep a busy animal shelter functioning—from staying on top of dishes and laundry to mopping floors, taking out garbage, cleaning common areas, and keeping supplies organized. Because these responsibilities need to happen throughout the day , this position will work during the shelter's regular open hours and will be part of the daily shelter environment around staff, volunteers, adopters, and dogs. The ideal candidate is someone who stays busy without needing to be constantly directed, notices when something needs to be cleaned or taken care of, and takes pride in keeping a facility clean and organized. Primary Responsibilities Daily Cleaning & Upkeep Wash and sanitize food and water bowls throughout the day. Run, dry, fold, and put away laundry, including blankets, towels, bedding, and other shelter linens. Mop shelter floors throughout the day as needed. Sweep, vacuum, and spot-clean floors and common areas. Clean and sanitize frequently touched surfaces, doors, gates, counters, sinks, and other areas. Empty garbage and recycling and keep waste areas clean. Clean up spills, messes, and other routine shelter accidents promptly. Keep bathrooms, staff areas, common areas, and other shared spaces clean and presentable. Restock paper products, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, and other frequently used items. Keep the laundry area, supply areas, and storage spaces organized. Help maintain a clean and welcoming environment for adopters, volunteers, staff, and visitors. Shelter Support Assist with receiving and putting away deliveries and donations. Help organize and move supplies throughout the shelter. Assist with moving laundry bins, cleaning equipment, crates, kennels, or other items as needed. Help prepare and clean up areas before and after shelter events or activities. Communicate when cleaning supplies or other frequently used items are running low. Report maintenance, safety, or facility concerns to management. Assist with other routine shelter tasks as needed. Working Around Animals This position will take place in an active dog shelter and will involve being around dogs throughout the workday. The employee will be expected to: Follow all Border Tails Rescue safety and animal-handling protocols. Safely navigate kennel and common areas while completing cleaning tasks. Be aware of dogs, gates, kennels, and staff working around them. Avoid entering kennels or handling dogs unless specifically instructed and trained to do so. Immediately report any safety concerns, damaged equipment, spills, or other issues that could affect the animals or people in the shelter. This is primarily a cleaning and shelter operations position and does not require regular dog handling. What We're Looking For Reliable and punctual. Comfortable performing repetitive cleaning and organizational tasks. Strong attention to detail. Able to work independently and stay productive throughout the shift. Willing to clean up messes, do laundry, wash dishes, mop floors, and perform other routine tasks every day. Comfortable working around dogs and in an animal shelter environment. Able to communicate respectfully with staff, volunteers, adopters, and visitors. Able to recognize what needs to be done without waiting for someone to assign every task. Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change throughout the day. Previous cleaning, custodial, housekeeping, kennel, veterinary, animal shelter, or similar experience is a plus but not required. Physical Requirements This position is physically active and requires the ability to: Stand and walk for extended periods. Frequently bend, kneel, squat, reach, push, and pull. Lift and carry laundry bags, cleaning supplies, garbage, and other items. Push laundry carts and cleaning equipment. Work around water, cleaning products, dirt, mud, and animal waste. Perform repetitive cleaning tasks throughout the workday. Work indoors and occasionally outdoors in varying weather conditions. Schedule This position will be scheduled during Border Tails Rescue's regular open hours to ensure daily cleaning and upkeep needs are addressed throughout the day. The schedule may be part-time or full-time depending on the shelter's needs and the candidate's availability. Weekend availability may be required. About the Role This position is an important part of keeping Border Tails Rescue functioning every day. In a busy shelter, dishes, laundry, clean floors, stocked supplies, and organized spaces are not small tasks—they directly impact the health, safety, and comfort of the dogs and the people caring for them. We're looking for someone who takes pride in being the person who sees what needs to be done and gets it done.
