1912 Cafe-Cafe Supervisor

Job Description

PHG is opening 1912 Café — a chef-driven breakfast and lunch concept anchored by a specialty coffee bar — inside the L.L. Bean flagship store in Freeport, Maine. It is a partnership built on two brands that share the same core belief: that quality, authenticity, and genuine care for people are never out of style. L.L. Bean's flagship in Freeport is not a typical retail location. It is one of the most visited destinations in New England, drawing millions of guests each year who arrive not just to shop, but to experience something. The 1912 Café will be at the center of that experience — the first thing guests smell when they walk in, the reason they linger longer, and the memory they carry home. The Cafe Supervisor works the counter and espresso bar right alongside the team — building drinks, running the POS, keeping the line moving — and carries the added responsibility of opening and/or closing the shift and being the one everyone looks to when a decision needs to be made. This is a working leadership role: you're in the rush with everyone else, just also holding the keys.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Work the espresso bar and counter as a Cashier/Barista for the full shift — pulling shots, building drinks to recipe, and running the POS right alongside the team. Open and/or close the Cafe depending on shift assignment: checklists, cash handling, and shift logs completed with accuracy. Set the pace and lead by example during the rush — direct the team in real time while working the line yourself. Ensure every guest is welcomed promptly and leaves satisfied — own any concern that comes up, whether it's yours or a teammate's. Monitor product quality and presentation across the counter and kitchen while you work. Maintain cleanliness, food safety, and sanitation protocols at all times. Communicate shift handoffs clearly with written logs for the incoming Supervisor or GM. Support the GM with inventory, ordering, and coaching Cashiers/Baristas and Cooks in the moment.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
1-2+ years in a supervisory or lead role in food and beverage, café, or hospitality, with hands-on time behind an espresso bar or register — not just oversight experience. Comfortable being both the leader and the line — as ready to jump on the register during a rush as to redirect the team. A natural leader — calm under pressure, decisive, and visibly invested in the team. Strong communication skills and a hospitality-first mindset in every guest interaction. Working knowledge of café operations and espresso service strong enough to run the bar yourself, not just supervise it. Cash handling experience and comfort with POS systems. ServSafe Food Handler certification (or willingness to obtain before start date). Availability to work opening and/or closing shifts, including weekends and holidays.
