//nmhistoricsites.org Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. Taylor-Mesilla Historic Site offers exhibits on borderlands and international art as well as broader Borderlands and Mesilla Valley history. As one of eight historic sites in New Mexico, Taylor-Mesilla plays an important cultural, historical, and educational role in presenting the history of New Mexico. Why does the job exist? This position is integral to the customer service and educational mission at Taylor-Mesilla Historic Site. Interpretive Rangers support operations, provide quality visitor experiences, participate in the development of interpretive and educational materials, and support facility maintenance efforts. How does it get done? This position is responsible for monitoring visitor areas, supporting the design and implementation of educational and public programs, assisting with the implementation of special events, researching and preparing written materials pertaining to the history of the site, providing guest services throughout the site, and supporting facility maintenance as needed. Who are the customers? This position serves the staff of Taylor-Mesilla, the Department of Cultural Affairs, and visitors to the site. Ideal Candidate This position serves the staff of Taylor-Mesilla, the Department of Cultural Affairs, and visitors to the site. Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification and one (1) year of experience working at historic sites, parks, museums, cultural centers, visitor centers as a tour guide, lecturer, educator, or interpretive/educational ranger to include experience in historic preservation and/or general maintenance. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting standing with exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT). Extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. A significant portion of the work will also be done in an outdoor setting, through various climates. This position will assist in the set-up and break down of events. The work schedule will include occasional after-hours scheduling and regular weekend presence.
