Full Job Description Director of Human Resources & Employment Compliance Location:

Full-Time, On-Site Compensation:
$140,000-$165,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications About the Opportunity A growing multi-location automotive dealership group in Southern California is seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources & Employment Compliance to lead the organization's human resources function. This is a hands-on leadership position for an HR professional with exceptional knowledge of California employment law, employee relations, workplace investigations, wage-and-hour compliance, and HR best practices. A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree is strongly preferred , particularly for candidates with employment and labor law education or experience. Automotive dealership experience is also highly desirable. The successful candidate will work closely with executive leadership and dealership management to build a consistent, compliant, accountable, and employee-focused HR organization across multiple locations.
Key Responsibilities California Employment Compliance:
Maintain compliance with California employment and labor requirements, including wage-and-hour, meal and rest periods, overtime, leaves of absence, accommodations, employee classification, recordkeeping, and other employment requirements.
Employee Relations:
Provide leadership and guidance on employee complaints, disciplinary actions, performance issues, terminations, workplace conflicts, and other sensitive employee matters.
Workplace Investigations:
Conduct and document thorough, impartial workplace investigations involving harassment, discrimination, retaliation, policy violations, employee complaints, and other workplace concerns.
HR Policies & Procedures:
Develop, review, implement, and consistently enforce company policies, procedures, documentation standards, and HR internal controls across multiple locations.
Management Guidance:
Partner with executives, general managers, department managers, and other leaders on employment decisions, documentation, corrective action, and HR best practices.
Risk Management:
Proactively identify employment-related risks and recommend corrective actions before issues develop into significant employee relations, regulatory, or legal matters.
Recruiting & Talent Management:
Develop recruiting and retention strategies and oversee hiring, onboarding, performance management, employee development, and succession planning.
Payroll & Benefits Oversight:
Provide HR oversight of payroll and benefits administration with particular attention to wage-and-hour compliance, employee classifications, compensation practices, and internal controls.
Training & Development:
Develop and coordinate management and employee training covering harassment prevention, wage-and-hour compliance, workplace conduct, documentation, leadership, and other HR requirements.
HR Reporting & Analytics:
Develop meaningful HR reporting for executive leadership, including turnover, overtime, meal penalties, recruiting, employee relations, workers' compensation, staffing, and other key workforce metrics.
Culture & Accountability:
Help establish a workplace culture centered on professionalism, ethical conduct, consistent treatment of employees, accountability, and compliance. Qualifications Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree strongly preferred , particularly with education or experience involving employment or labor law. Minimum of 5 years of progressive Human Resources management experience , including substantial California HR experience. Strong working knowledge of California employment and labor law and practical experience applying those requirements in the workplace. Demonstrated experience conducting and documenting workplace investigations . Significant experience managing employee complaints, disciplinary actions, performance issues, terminations, and sensitive employee-relations matters. Proven ability to develop and consistently enforce HR policies, procedures, documentation standards, and internal controls. Experience with recruiting, onboarding, performance management, employee relations, training, payroll/benefits oversight, and compliance. Automotive dealership experience strongly preferred. Experience supporting a multi-location organization strongly preferred. California HR certification such as PHRca, SPHRca, SHRM-CP, or
SHRM-SCP
preferred , but not required for candidates possessing substantial California employment-law and HR experience. Exceptional judgment, discretion, professionalism, analytical ability, and written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently, challenge practices when necessary, and provide sound recommendations to senior leadership. Ability to manage multiple priorities and sensitive matters in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with HRIS/payroll systems and Microsoft Office. This position requires someone comfortable being hands-on—investigating issues, reviewing documentation, working directly with managers and employees, analyzing HR data, and helping leadership make well-informed decisions.
