Critical Fill Position:
This position has been designated as a critical staffing need due to its essential role in supporting the College's operations, regulatory compliance, instructional delivery, and/or student services. Recruitment efforts may be expedited to minimize operational disruptions. Position may be filled prior to closing date.Primary Work Location:
Elizabeth City Campus. Occasional travel to the Dare Campus may be required based on operational needs.- Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
The Part-Time Instructor, Welding Technology is responsible for providing high-quality classroom, shop, and laboratory instruction in welding courses in support of the College's mission and educational goals. The instructor promotes student learning through effective teaching strategies, practical hands-on instruction, active engagement, and the use of instructional and shop technologies and online learning management systems that support student success, skill mastery, and technical achievement. The Part-Time Instructor, Welding Technology provides instruction in accordance with approved course outcomes, departmental standards, industry codes, and College policies and procedures. The position supports a student-centered learning environment that encourages critical thinking, technical problem-solving, craftsmanship, and lifelong learning. The Part-Time Instructor, Welding Technology receives general supervision from the Program Coordinator, Welding Systems Technologies. Examples of Duties Instruction and Student Learning Prepare and deliver classroom, shop/lab, hybrid, and/or online instruction in assigned welding courses (e.g., SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, cutting, and blueprint reading). Develop and maintain course and shop instructional materials that support approved curriculum and student learning outcomes. Utilize a variety of instructional methods, hands-on demonstrations, technologies, and learning activities to enhance student engagement and technical skill achievement. Foster an inclusive, respectful, safe, and student-centered learning environment. Encourage technical reasoning, spatial awareness, blueprints/symbol interpretation, and shop problem-solving skills. Evaluate and assess student performance through practical welding tests (e.g., bend tests, visual inspections), assignments, written examinations, projects, and other instructional methods and set forth by the department. Course Administration Maintain and update course syllabi in accordance with College, departmental, and industry standards. Maintain accurate and timely records of attendance, grades, practical weld test logs, and student progress. Utilize the College's learning management system (LMS) and other instructional technologies to support course delivery and communication. Create, maintain, and update course content, assignments, and grades within the College's learning management system. Submit grades, shop records, reports, and other required documentation in an accurate and timely manner. Adhere to assigned teaching schedules, lab supervision responsibilities, and workload expectations. Student Support and Engagement Communicate regularly with students regarding academic/technical performance, practical progress, and course expectations. Provide appropriate technical guidance, safety coaching, and refer students to College support services when needed. Respond to student inquiries in a timely and professional manner. Maintain reasonable availability to support student success and hands-on practice. Curriculum and Professional Responsibilities Maintain current knowledge within the welding discipline, industry standards, and instructional best practices. Evaluate instructional materials, tools, consumable supplies, and shop equipment, recommending updates or repairs as appropriate. Integrate emerging welding and teaching strategies when appropriate to enhance student learning. Support departmental, divisional, and institutional initiatives as appropriate. Adhere to all College policies, procedures, academic regulations, and accreditation requirements. Shop/Laboratory Safety and Compliance Maintain a safe, clean, and organized instructional and shop laboratory environment for students, faculty, and staff. Follow established protocols regarding the handling, storage, and disposal of compressed gas cylinders, shielding gases, hazardous chemicals, metals, and scrap materials. Ensure strict compliance with applicable shop safety standards, industry guidelines, and OSHA requirements. Enforce proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards and promote safe welding and thermal cutting practices among students at all times. Inspect, maintain, and ensure proper operating condition of shop machinery, welding machines, ventilation systems, and cutting tools and report any concerns to the Program Coordinator. Other Duties Perform other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications Required Education:
High School Diploma/GED combined with documented active industry experiences and/or formal training and/or industry recognized certifications.
Demonstrated Ability:
To effectively teach in the area assigned (blueprint reading, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, cutting processes, etc.)
Preferred Education:
Diploma or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Welding Technology.
Certifications:
AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), AWS Certified Welding Educator (CWE), or NCCER Certified Instructor status. Two (2) years of post-secondary teaching or industrial training experience. Experience teaching shop/lab-based welding courses. Experience teaching hybrid, evening, or technology-enhanced workforce training courses. Experience utilizing learning management systems (LMS) such as Canvas, Moodle, D2L Brightspace, Blackboard, or similar platforms for course management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of effective technical instruction and hands-on skill demonstration. Welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW), cutting, blueprint reading, welding symbols, and testing methods (destructive and non-destructive). Community college philosophy, mission, technical program goals, and diverse student populations. Student learning outcomes, practical skill assessment, and technical competence standards. Industrial shop safety practices, ventilation protocols, compressed gas safety, and applicable OSHA requirements. Learning management systems, shop management technologies, and educational resources.
Ability to:
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Demonstrate technical welding techniques clearly and safely in a hands-on shop environment. Effectively use computers, instructional technologies, LMS platforms, and shop diagnostic equipment. Establish positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and local industry partners. Demonstrate strong organization, time management, material inventory management, and attention to detail. Promote student engagement, safe work habits, skill retention, and academic/career success. Demonstrate resourcefulness, initiative, enthusiasm, and a commitment to helping students achieve their career goals. Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining rigorous safety standards. Working Conditions Work is performed in classroom, shop/lab, and online instructional environments. The position involves physical labor typical of a welding environment, requiring standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting heavy materials (up to 50 lbs), maneuvering compressed gas cylinders, operating machinery, and demonstrating welding procedures for extended periods. The job requires adherence to established safety protocols and PPE. Evening, weekend, online, and off-campus/workforce site instructional assignments may be required based on institutional needs and course scheduling. Instructional assignments are contingent upon enrollment, program needs, funding availability, and administrative approval.
