Position Summary:

The Cat Attendant plays a critical role in the daily care, health, and emotional well-being of shelter cats. Primary responsibilities include maintaining a clean, sanitized, and biosecure housing environment, executing feeding and medication schedules, providing socialization and enrichment, monitoring physical health and behavior, updating records in ShelterLuv, and facilitating positive interactions with the public to promote adoptions. All staff members are expected to contribute actively to a clean, safe, and positive work culture for team members, volunteers, and the public.

Key Responsibilities:

Daily Animal Care & Feeding Feed cats and kittens twice daily according to specific dietary guidelines (standard, kitten, or prescription diets). Provide continuous access to fresh water in cages, condos, and common rooms throughout the day. Safely handle, transfer, and transport cats between housing units, common areas, and isolation rooms. Clean, scoop, and replace cat litter boxes immediately upon observation and during scheduled cleaning rounds. Review daily memos, handling alerts, and special instructions in ShelterLuv regarding individual cats prior to care. Sanitation & Facility Upkeep Thoroughly clean and disinfect cat cages, condos, common rooms, and litter boxes daily according to shelter biosecurity and sanitation protocols. Wash and sanitize all food/water bowls, enrichment toys, bedding, and shelter laundry continuously throughout the day. Perform routine facility maintenance duties, including taking out trash, sweeping/mopping common areas, and sorting/organizing physical donations. Maintain strict disease control protocols to prevent cross-contamination between general population, intake, and medical/isolation areas. Health & Behavior Monitoring Perform daily physical health checks and monitor cats continuously for signs of illness, physical distress, or changes in behavior (e.g., upper respiratory symptoms, lethargy, appetite loss, digestive issues). Administer daily oral, topical, or prescribed medical treatments precisely as directed, logging all administered doses immediately in ShelterLuv. Maintain accurate medical, behavioral, and intake care records in ShelterLuv; report any health or safety concerns to management immediately. Enrichment, Public Engagement & Profile Care Provide daily structured enrichment, mental stimulation, and gentle socialization for cats to improve adoptability and decrease stress. Show cats to prospective adopters, answer questions, conduct meet-and-greets, and assist visitors while ensuring guest and animal safety at all times. Take clear, high-quality photos and videos of shelter cats and update their profile statuses in ShelterLuv to support adoption promotion and digital marketing. Support data entry for animal intakes, status updates, and medical schedules within ShelterLuv. Teamwork & Workplace Culture Actively contribute to a positive, collaborative, and professional environment for coworkers and volunteers. Demonstrate patience, clear communication, and hospitality when interacting with shelter visitors, adopters, and volunteer staff.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Lifting & Physical Labor:

Ability to repeatedly lift, push, pull, and carry up to 40 lbs (e.g., litter bags, cases of canned food, laundry baskets, trash barrels, and animal carriers).

Feline Handling:

Capacity to handle, control, and safely manage cats of all temperaments, including nervous, shy, or fractious animals.

Stamina:

Ability to stand, walk, bend, crouch, kneel, and perform heavy physical cleaning labor throughout the shift.

Environmental & Chemical Exposure:

Comfort working safely around cleaning chemicals/disinfectants, airborne litter dust, and animal dander. Qualifications & Competencies Must be 18 years of age or older. Prior experience in animal care, feline handling, shelter operations, or veterinary settings preferred. Basic digital literacy, with the ability to learn and regularly use shelter management software (ShelterLuv) for data entry, status tracking, and medical logs. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written medical, dietary, and operational instructions accurately. Dependable, punctual, and capable of working effectively both independently and within a team. Strong communication and customer service skills when engaging with the public.
