Animal Care Specialist Humane Society of Northwest Iowa (HSNWIA) Milford, IA Job Summary The Humane Society of Northwest Iowa (HSNWIA) is seeking a compassionate and adaptable Animal Care Specialist to join our shelter team. This cross-trained role provides daily care, enrichment, sanitation, and behavioral observation for both cats and dogs. Team members must be comfortable moving between feline and canine areas based on shelter needs. Key Responsibilities Provide daily feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and comfort care for cats and dogs. Maintain clean, safe housing areas in compliance with shelter and state standards (training provided). Observe and document animal behavior, health, and wellness changes. Administer medications, basic treatments, and special diets under veterinary direction. Walk dogs and provide structured exercise and enrichment. Provide enrichment and socialization for cats. Assist with animal intakes, vaccinations, and transports to veterinary appointments. Support and guide volunteers during daily care tasks. Engage professionally with adopters, visitors, and the public. Follow all safety, sanitation, and disease-control protocols. Qualifications Animal care, shelter, rescue, or veterinary experience preferred (training available). Comfortable handling animals of various sizes, temperaments, and medical needs. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods. Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
