The DOG

Senior Dog Trainer

Job Description

Senior Dog Trainer FT position available. Salary commensurate with experience. Regular travel to NYC required. The DOG is New York and Connecticut's leading dog training company. For over 15 years, our staff of trainers, counselors, drivers and client service personnel have worked together to provide world-class service to an elite clientele. We are seeking a Senior Trainer to join our Training Department. Our Trainers run board-and-train campers through the core disciplines using only positive reinforcement. Trainers work with puppies and dogs of every breed on basic obedience and behavior issues, ensuring good manners hold up anywhere. When campers go home, you'll instruct owners through private lessons to apply at home all the things they learned at camp. If you read dogs fluently, communicate just as well with people, and love this work as much as the dogs do, we want to talk to you.
Duties and responsibilities include:
Responsible for teaching the core disciplines, house training, and manners, using proven methods developed by the founder. Work with the team to train multiple dogs throughout the day. Run applied learning outings to proof their training around adults, children, and other distractions. Travel to owners homes to conduct the follow-up lessons required to transfer skills developed at camp. Help develop training protocols for individual behavior issues. Track and note each dog's progress or issues throughout their stay.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Strong, confident dog handling and the ability to read dog body language. Understanding of positive reinforcement training methods — that's the only approach we use. CPDT, PPG, SFSPEA, CASI, ABC, Karen Pryor or Catch Academy certification preferred but not required. Weekends/holidays as needed. Flexibility is a must. Reports to the Training Director. We prefer all our team members to have hands-on group experience and like to promote from within. Opportunities for growth extend across all departments and positions.
