Are you passionate about canine behavior and wellbeing? We're looking for an experienced Animal Behavior Coordinator to join our team. In this role, you'll have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of shelter dogs and cats by assessing their needs, developing behavior modification plans, and working closely with staff, volunteers, and potential adopters to ensure each dog or cat has the best possible chance for success. We're seeking a compassionate, knowledgeable, and solutions-driven individual who is skilled in positive reinforcement training methods and can thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume shelter environment. If you have a deep understanding of canine and feline behavior, an ability to work with dogs of all temperaments, and a passion for making a real difference, we want to hear from you! SUMMARY Animal Behavior Coordinator is responsible for the behavioral health and wellness of all animals at the shelter; crafting and implementing behavior plans, enrichment, and behavior programs both for individual animals and shelter-wide; and upholding the values and mission of the shelter. Must have a willingness to learn, innovate, and implement change.
JOB DUTIES
Behavior Protocols o Assist with training of new kennel staff, primarily in regards to animal handling and enrichment o Create, implement, improve behavior modification plans for dogs and cats on and off site
Enrichment o Develop diverse, daily enrichment plan/schedule for all shelter animals o Create individualized enrichment plans for animals needing special care o Coordinate with kennel staff and volunteers to prepare enrichment activities
Oversee and manage behavior of all shelter animals o Perform a daily census ensuring animals are marked with appropriate behavioral attributes, assessments, and memos in Shelterluv o Observe, identify, and immediately address animals showing signs of kennel stress and/or behavioral deterioration o Check and address all Behavior checks submitted by staff daily o Communicate regularly with Pathway Manager about temperament, needs, plans, and suggestions for shelter animals o Coordinate and oversee daily playgroups • Other duties as assigned Work Environment This job functions both outdoors and indoors.
Must be able to lift, carry up to 50lbs. Must be prepared for extended amounts of time standing or walking. This position requires physical expectations including handling large dogs on and off leash and restraining dogs. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and move for extended periods of time. Must have reliable transportation to conduct work at the shelter in Summerville.
