Job Summary The Surgical Assistant plays a vital role in supporting veterinary surgeons during surgical procedures. This position requires a blend of technical skills and animal handling expertise to ensure the safety and well-being of animals undergoing surgery. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to providing high-quality care and maintaining a sterile environment throughout surgical processes. Duties Assist veterinarians and registered technicians during surgical procedures by preparing instruments and equipment. Maintain aseptic technique to prevent infection during surgeries. Monitor animal vitals and anesthesia levels throughout the procedure. Provide post-operative care, including monitoring recovery and administering medications. Ensure that all surgical instruments are properly cleaned, sterilized, and organized. Provide exceptional animal care, ensuring comfort and safety before, during, and after surgery. Handle dogs and other animals with confidence to minimize stress during procedures. Skills Proficient in animal handling techniques, particularly with dogs and cats. Experience in a veterinary clinic setting is preferred for familiarity with procedures and protocols. Strong understanding of aseptic techniques to maintain a sterile environment during surgeries. Ability to administer medications accurately under the guidance of veterinarians. Familiarity with laboratory practices related to veterinary medicine is advantageous. Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with clients and team members. Strong organizational skills to manage surgical instruments and maintain cleanliness in the surgical area. Experience working in a kennel or similar environment is beneficial for handling various animal behaviors. This role is essential for ensuring that surgical operations run smoothly while providing compassionate care for animals.
