Job Description Veterinary Technician Reports to: Practice Owner / Office Manager Position Description The veterinary technician is the doctors primary medical support person. They assist the veterinarian in diagnosing and treating patients. This includes testing blood, urine, stool and other samples, administering vaccines and other medications under a veterinarian's direction, administering anesthesia and otherwise preparing animals for surgery, and any other tasks necessary to help the veterinarian with the care and treatment of patients. They assist the doctor in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. They have a very significant role in communicating with clients about their pets Responsibilities Assists the doctor in medical & surgical procedures; prepares patients for surgery; assists the doctor in administering anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids. Places IV catheters for surgery patients & euthanasia pets. Gives injections and administers oral medications. Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as heartworm checks, urinalysis, fecal flotation exams. Draws blood on cats & dogs for laboratory analysis. Performs physical examinations, records observations on patients. Prepares and maintains the exam rooms. Assists in restraining when necessary. Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to clients. Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders, ensure patients are clean and in a medically appropriate state. Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home. Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used, keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery. Understand and carries out oral and written directions. Assists other staff members as required. Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees. Requirements High School Diploma Veterinary Technician Certification preferred At least two years experience as a veterinary assistant preferred but not required. Physical Effort Work requires lifting and carrying animals with the assistance of other staff members. Walks or stands for extended periods of time. Working Conditions May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.
