Position Summary:

The Gulf Coast Humane Society (GCHS) is seeking a dependable, compassionate, and skilled Veterinary Technician to support the Clinic department. The Veterinary Technician provides and assists with veterinary care, including animal intake and assessment, vaccinations, medications, diagnostics, surgery, anesthesia, recovery, and ongoing medical monitoring. This position works closely with veterinarians and clinic staff to ensure animals receive safe, compassionate, and appropriate medical care while maintaining high standards of animal welfare, sanitation, safety, documentation, and clinic operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Animal Intake, Assessment & Care Perform routine intake examinations and assess animals for overall health, illness, injury, infectious conditions, behavioral concerns, and other medical needs. Obtain and document vital signs and clinical observations; review medical records, vaccination history, care plans, and treatment instructions in accordance with GCHS protocols and veterinary direction. Conduct daily rounds and monitor animals for changes in behavior, appetite, hydration, elimination, activity, vital signs, and overall condition. Provide appropriate feeding, watering, housing, treatment, and post-procedure care for animals receiving medical treatment. Promptly identify, respond to, and communicate signs of illness, injury, pain, infection, stress, or other changes requiring veterinary attention. Medications, Treatments & Diagnostics Administer vaccinations, medications, fluids, and other preventive or medical treatments in accordance with GCHS protocols and veterinary direction. Perform and document approved diagnostic procedures, including SNAP tests, fecal examinations, skin scrapes, blood collection, IV catheter placement, radiographs/X-rays, and other testing as directed. Provide wound care, including cleaning, dressing, bandaging, and wrapping wounds, as well as suture and staple removal as directed. Perform hydrotherapy, physical therapy, inhalation therapy, and other treatments as directed by the veterinarian. Prepare animals, supplies, instruments, equipment, and treatment areas for examinations, diagnostics, and medical procedures. Monitor animals throughout examinations and treatments and promptly communicate changes or concerns to the veterinarian or appropriate clinic staff. Surgery & Anesthesia Support Assist veterinarians with surgical procedures, anesthesia, patient monitoring, recovery, and post-operative care. Prepare surgical rooms, equipment, instruments, supplies, and patients while maintaining sterile conditions. Safely restrain, position, and prepare surgical patients according to established protocols. Operate and monitor anesthesia, ECG, and other patient-monitoring equipment as directed; assist with intubation and other procedures within the scope of the position. Prepare and verify medications and surgical supplies and ensure surgical patients are properly identified and scheduled, including animals in foster care. Monitor patients during anesthesia and recovery and promptly report abnormalities or concerns to the veterinarian. Animal Handling & Safety Safely and compassionately handle, transport, secure, and restrain animals for examinations, treatments, diagnostics, surgery, and routine care using techniques appropriate to their size, temperament, behavior, and medical condition. Recognize and appropriately respond to fear, stress, aggression, pain, illness, and other behavioral or medical concerns. Use required PPE and safety equipment and follow all GCHS safety procedures and protocols. Promptly report bites, scratches, injuries, escapes, exposure incidents, unsafe conditions, and other safety concerns. Medical Records & Documentation Maintain accurate, complete, and timely medical records, cage cards, health charts, treatment instructions, and other required documentation. Document and enter vaccinations, medications, treatments, diagnostics, surgeries, procedures, clinical findings, veterinarian notes, and changes in animal condition into ShelterLuv. Clearly communicate and document medical instructions and treatment plans. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling animal, client, adopter, foster, and organizational information. Clinic Operations, Sanitation & Inventory Maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies, medications, vaccines, diagnostic tests, instruments, and other clinic materials; monitor expiration dates and report shortages or supply needs. Properly store medications, vaccines, sterile supplies, and other medical materials according to established requirements. Maintain medical and surgical equipment according to manufacturer instructions and GCHS procedures; identify and report malfunctions, maintenance needs, and safety concerns. Clean, disinfect, sterilize, and properly maintain examination, treatment, surgical, animal housing, and other clinic areas, equipment, and instruments. Properly handle and dispose of animal waste, contaminated materials, sharps, and medical waste. Follow all GCHS sanitation, biosecurity, infection-control, and medical care protocols. General Responsibilities Maintain a professional, compassionate, respectful, and mission-focused approach when interacting with animals, staff, volunteers, adopters, clients, foster caregivers, and the public. Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with veterinarians, veterinary staff, shelter staff, volunteers, foster caregivers, and other GCHS team members. Provide authorized individuals with appropriate information regarding an animal's medical status as directed. Exercise sound judgment when responding to animal care and medical concerns. Work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume veterinary clinic / shelter environment. Follow all GCHS policies, procedures, SOPs, safety protocols, and medical care standards. Perform other duties as assigned based on the needs and priorities of GCHS.

Schedule and Work Structure:

The position is generally scheduled according to the operational needs of the Clinic and may include weekends, holidays, overtime, mandatory meetings, and other schedule adjustments as needed to ensure appropriate animal care and clinic operations. The position requires working in a fast-paced, high-volume shelter veterinary clinic and may involve frequent interruptions, changing priorities, and animals requiring varying levels of medical care, monitoring, handling, and behavioral support. The position may occasionally require working independently, outdoors, or in varying weather conditions.

$14.00 - $22.00 per hour based on experience.

Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age. Previous veterinary technician experience required. Previous experience working with animals in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, rescue organization, or similar environment required or strongly preferred. Knowledge of animal health, veterinary terminology, animal behavior, safe animal handling, and basic veterinary medical procedures. Ability to safely and compassionately handle and restrain animals of varying sizes, temperaments, medical conditions, and behavioral needs. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform routine veterinary technician procedures within the scope of training and established GCHS protocols. Ability to recognize signs of illness, injury, pain, infection, stress, fear, or behavioral changes and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate veterinary team member. Ability to accurately document medical information and maintain complete and timely animal records. Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, veterinary directives, medical protocols, and safety procedures. Ability to exercise sound judgment and respond appropriately to changing medical and animal-care situations. Ability to operate and maintain veterinary medical equipment as trained. Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a veterinary and shelter team. Dependable, punctual, responsible, and adaptable. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to maintain professionalism and composure when interacting with emotionally charged situations and members of the public. Willingness to work in a demanding, high-volume shelter veterinary environment.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, reach, sit, push, and pull throughout an entire work shift. Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks and maintain manual dexterity necessary to operate medical equipment and perform veterinary procedures. Ability to safely lift, carry, transfer, and restrain animals weighing up to 100 pounds, with appropriate assistance and equipment when necessary. Ability to safely handle animals that may be fearful, stressed, injured, sick, recovering from surgery, unruly, or otherwise difficult to handle. Ability to work around animals with infectious diseases, parasites, wounds, bodily fluids, animal waste, unpleasant odors, and other conditions commonly associated with animal shelters and veterinary clinics. Ability to work around and safely use cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, medications, anesthetic agents, and other materials commonly used in a veterinary environment. Hearing adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Vision adequate to perform job duties, including reading medical records, printed materials, labels, and information displayed on computer screens and medical equipment. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person and over the telephone. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high-volume medical caseload, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities. May be exposed to emotionally difficult situations involving sick, injured, suffering, deceased, or euthanized animals. May interact with members of the public who are emotionally distressed, upset, hostile, or abusive. May be required to work alone, outdoors, or in varying weather conditions. Must be available and willing to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and mandatory meetings as required by clinic operations.
