POSITION SUMMARY

The Deputy Marshal holds a critical role in upholding the integrity and operational continuity of the Magistrate Court. This position is primarily charged with the formal execution and service of civil and criminal process, a function essential to the timely advancement of the judicial calendar. In addition to these procedural duties, the Deputy Marshal is responsible for the physical preparation and security of the courtroom, ensuring a controlled environment for all proceedings. By providing dedicated protection for Magistrates, court personnel, legal counsel, and the public, the incumbent serves as the primary guarantor of safety within the courtroom. Success in this capacity requires strict adherence to the regulatory frameworks established in

O.C.G.A. 15-10-100

through 15-10-103 and the Uniform Magistrate Court Rules of Georgia. Given that administrative errors can significantly impede the judicial process, the Deputy Marshal must maintain a high standard of accuracy and professional diligence. Furthermore, the role involves a distinct element of risk, requiring the incumbent to exercise sound judgment and composure when navigating potentially hostile encounters during the service of legal documents. The Deputy Marshal must maintain professional decorum while interacting with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including members of the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and the general public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Holds a current Georgia P.O.S.T. peace officer certification Must qualify on the CCMD firearm qualification course Must pass all drug screens and physicals Has the ability to attain certification in the use of oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray, expandable baton, and Taser Hold and maintain a valid driver's license

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

Serve all civil papers filed with the Court including dispossessories, claims, warrants, writs of possession, rule nisi, garnishments, interrogatories, and subpoenas Execute Writs of Possession and Fi.

Fa. orders in accordance with legal requirements Detain/Arrest individuals Provide security for prisoners brought into the Courtroom Carries deposits of Court funds to the banks as needed Maintains records of all papers that are assigned by the Court Serves all bad check citations filed with the Court Completes necessary paperwork Renders aid/assistance to local, state, and federal agencies Assist other county agencies and departments Performs all other related duties as assigned by the Chief Magistrate, Chief Marshal, and Chief Clerk of the Magistrate Court

KNOWLEDGE OR SKILLS REQUIRED

Knowledge of county geography and roads Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws/ordinances Knowledge of current law enforcement practices/procedures Ability to communicate with the general public Knowledge of the Columbia County Marshal's Department Policy Knowledge of the processes of the Magistrate Court and of the various forms filed through the Court Knowledge of proper operating procedures for portable radios Skill in operating an emergency vehicle and upkeep of the vehicle Skill in dealing with the public

BASIC PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES REQUIRED

Work is performed riding in an automobile, standing, walking, sitting at a desk or table Walking, running moderate distances, bending, reaching, and climbing stairs and ladders Lifting, pushing, and pulling heavy objects Use of hands/feet for self-defense and/or defense of others Use of restraining devices, restraining holds, and control holds A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
