Work Schedule:

\nThis is a part-time, hourly position.\nDaily shifts varies during school days.\nPost assignments will have varied schedules based on school hours.\nTimes will vary depending on school assignments.

Salary Range:

$23.00 per hour. For any current MPS employee, you will be paid your current school hourly rate up to $25 per hour.\n(MPS employees may not work shifts that overlap with their regular, daily work schedule.) Morning shift is minimum pay of 1 hour, mid-day shifts combined are minimum pay of 1 hour, and afternoon shift is minimum pay of 1 hour.\n

Job Summary:

\nA crossing guard's primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of the children crossing streets on their way to and from school. School crossing guards oversee and control traffic flow around schools in the morning and at the end of the school day. According to

MUTCD 7D.2

- Adult crossing guards shall not direct traffic in the usual law enforcement regulatory sense. In the control of traffic, they shall pick opportune times to create a sufficient gap in the traffic flow. At these times, they shall stand in the roadway to indicate that pedestrians are about to use or are using the crosswalk, and that all vehicular traffic must stop.\nCrossing guards can stop traffic in the manner described above and below.\n

Organizational Relationship or Line of Authority:

Directly responsible to the Director of Finance & Operations designee. Must also adhere to directives of the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, and policies of the Marlborough School Committee. Must also comply with all directives from the Police Department.\n

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

Create gaps in traffic, where necessary, to help students cross the street safely.\nProject a positive public image and serve as a positive role model for children.\nFollow basic principles of student safety at all times.\nStand while children are present and be prepared to act quickly in case of an unexpected event or emergency.\nReport any unusual situation involving the safety of students, which are brought to their attention (e.g. irresponsible motorists, adults harassing students oir students harassing other students).\nEncouraging patterns of proper crossing behavior by school children.\nDeterring school children from committing unsafe acts.\nInforming motorists, witn hand signals and stop sign, that school children are using or are about to use the crossing.\nObserve and report incidents and/or conditions that present a potential hazard to the children's or crossing guard's safety.\nPerforming other duties as assigned by the building Principal, directives of the Superintendent of schools or his/her designee, and Policies of the Marlborough School Committee.\n

Additional Information:

\nArrive promptly at their assigned post each day and remain at their post throughout their shift.\nCall at least one hour prior to the start of their assigned shift if unable to cover assigned post due to illness or another emergency.\nImmediately report to their supervisor any injury sustained while on duty.\nBe on time and neatly attired.\nA crossing guard shall not sit in his/her car, conduct personal business or use tobacco in any form while on duty.\nRefrain from use of foul language or inappropriate behavior while on duty.\nNot use radios or headphones (other than two-way communication radios), read books, magazines, newspapers or any other written material while on duty.\nNot agree to requests or directives by school personnel to change or add to their duties until directed to do so by the Building Principal, or his/her designee.\n

JUDGEMENT

\nThe work is well defined or has detailed rules, instructions and procedures. Judgment involves choosing the appropriate practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines to apply in each case.\n

COMPLEXITY

\nThe work consists of simple, routine or repetitive tasks and/or operations with few variations in well-known or established procedures.\n

LOCATIONS

\nCrossing guards may be stationed only when it is necessary to control or direct vehicular or pedestrian traffic during time periods of a school day, when it is necessary to control traffic during any special event or program involving pedestrian crossings, or whenever it is deemed to be in the best interests of public safety. The criteria for determining crossing guard locations including the following: number of children; accident history; age of children; possible alternative routes; design of intersection; traffic speed; type of traffic control; width of intersection; volume of traffic; physical terrain; and all other factors deemed by the supervisor.\n

Equipment Provided:

\nIf issued by the department, school-crossing guards shall wear a uniform or use the following uniform items and equipment.\nFluorescent/retro-reflective vest with \"crossing guard\" in bold lettering. The vest shall be dot approved.\nFluorescent raincoat and/or wind breaker.\nStop paddle.\nOther equipment as deemed necessary in the performance of the position.\n

Training:

\nSchool crossing guards shall receive field training by the School Resource Officer, or another sworn officer for a period of one (1) week. During this training, they will also be instructed on the traffic laws of the commonwealth.\nThe crossing guards will then be monitored to ensure that they are capable of completing their duties safely and respectfully.\nIf the field instruction reveals performance deficiencies, additional training may be provided.\n

Qualifications:

\nAbility to work well with students, staff and community members.\nIs of good moral character.\nAbility to operate independently as well as a member of a team and can use sound judgement in handling matters while maintaining a safe physical environment for all students.\nSuch alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.\n

WORK ENVIRONMENT

\nThe nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Work is performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.

PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS

Physical Skills:

The work involves sitting, standing, walking, stooping, arm raising and holding a stop sign.\n

Motor Skills:

Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination.\n

Visual Skills:

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
