Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Crossing Guard Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
This is specialized work in the control of traffic in conjunction with the movement of children to and from school and school safety practices in general. These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Assisting children with crossing the street while going to/from school. Stops and controls vehicular traffic at designated crossing to allow children to cross safely. Controls children using the crossing to assure that they conform to traffic regulations. Takes appropriate action with children who fail to cooperate and reports such action to immediate supervisor. Reports motorists who fail to observe safe motor vehicle operation in school crossing zone. Checks traffic signals for proper operation; reports malfunctions. Directs traffic when necessary; stops traffic to allow school bus to enter and exit school property. Direct street crossings for parades and other special events as needed. Performs related tasks as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of traffic regulations; general knowledge of school locations and traffic patterns; ability and willingness to work in inclement weather throughout the year; ability to follow oral and written instructions; dependability; courtesy; tact; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, parents and the general public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, standing, and walking; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for peripheral vision, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
