Job Overview We are seeking a highly motivated, highly responsible, "team-builder", who's looking for that special "second career" opportunity. While a lot will be expected of individuals working in this part-time role (29.5hrs weekly), in this fast paced, challenging, service-oriented environment (as we build this program and establish it as more vital resource in the community); the selected individual will be well-compensated (both monetarily and the fringe benefits of the position), and be able to take great pride in serving this community in yet another great way! Interested parties should have previous Law Enforcement or Public Safety expertise, supervisory experience, familiar with both our York City neighborhoods, our schools, and extremely familiar with our York County public safety systems. Interested individuals will then be expected to join our team (as a civilian member of the York City Police Department) and help us (the City of York & the School District of the City of York) in this reimagined role, as the City of York's first Safe Routes/Crossing Guard Coordinator . As the Safe Routes/Crossing Guard Coordinator, individuals will be responsible for managing the City of York's Crossing-guard program (and related staff), serve as a liaison between the both the City of York and the School District, be a highly visible point of contact for parents and neighborhood concerns, and play a critical role in ensuring the safety of children and pedestrians throughout our community (during the school day and school year). Safe Routes/Crossing Guard Coordinator Responsibilities & Duties Aid in the Development of the program Facilitate Training, Preparedness, and Support for all assigned staff Assist the Chief/Commissioner of Police and his/her designees, by facilitating meetings, and Presenting about the program when needed Help provide oversight for the City of York/School District of the City of York Safe Routes Corridor . Helping identify, Interview, and hire Crossing-Guard staff Identify new Crossing-Guard Substitutes and maintain an active pool Scheduling and Coordination of Crossing-Guard posts and assignments Remaining available to take "Call-Offs" and handle re-assignments (prioritizing high traffic or dangerous intersections as needed) Assure presence of assigned personnel (through patrols, "rounding" practices, and the use of technology) Coordinate Body Worn Camera operation and the management of stored video Responding to issues, Emergencies, and Concerns; making on the spot decisions (by policy and best practice), facilitating appropriate interventions, and taking corrective action when necessary Aid in the day-to-day duties and responsibilities, to include (but not limited to); Assist children and pedestrians in safely crossing streets. Direct traffic at designated crosswalks. Monitor the flow of vehicles to ensure student safety. Help Law Enforcement enforce traffic laws relating to pedestrian crossing. Communicate with Police Department personnel and school officials about any safety concerns. Provide a visible presence to deter potential accidents and incidents. Help develop an identify strategies to educate students on safe pedestrian practices. Respond to, help Manage, and Report hazardous conditions to the appropriate authorities. Help the City of York & the School District of the City of York, by setting a standard of good citizenship, and appropriate conduct, when traveling about the community; that this City's youth, parents, families, residents, and travelers can count on. Help add an extra layer of protection for York's Youth, Serving as a "Best Witness" resource (for both Law Enforcement and School Officials), along the established York City "GO Safe Walking Route" corridors. Providing a comforting frontline resource for parents, receiving their concerns, and reporting on issues observed each shift. Maintaining a positive, professional and approachable demeanor when dealing with: children, parents, residents, travelers, school staff, and city personnel. Verifiable Professional Law Enforcement or Public Safety Experience Previous Supervisory or Leadership Experience Previous experience working with youth, parents, families and school officials preferred Extensive knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle operations, and safety regulations. Familiarity with the local area and traffic patterns. Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Effective written communicator, familiar with technology and basic office systems, such as: email, Word, Powerpoint, Teams, Excel, and Microsoft office Must be at least 21 years old. High school diploma or equivalent, Degree OR Professional certifications verifying experience Valid Driver's License Successful completion of the City of York's basic background check. Ability to stand for long periods during peak traffic times. Capable of working in various weather conditions. Wear assigned items of high visibility gear, carry and utilize assigned equipment (able to routinely lift items of equipment weighing less than 15lbs) Able to tolerate loud noise, flashing lights, and other temporary sensory challenges Follows direction well, able to work with supervisors to achieve missions and goals Able to manage time throughout the day, in order to accommodate a part-time, "split shift" schedule (i.e.; being able to schedule, plan for the day, and patrol to assure staff are present at assigned intersections for student "intake" in the morning, and be back again to monitor, supervise and provide guidance in the afternoon for "dismissal") Willing to assist and/or intercede in emergency issues involving children And assure all situations are properly responded to, issues reported, and staff and stakeholders kept advised All persons who shall become employed by the City shall be or become a resident of York County, or any County contiguous to York County (Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Hartford, Baltimore, and Carrol Counties), within six (6) months from the date the employee achieves permanent employment status.
