Kansas State Fire Marshal https://firemarshal.ks.gov/ The Kansas State Fire Marshal (KSFM) office is dedicated to protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Kansas from the hazards of fire, explosion, and natural and man-made disasters. The KSFM is organized into five divisions: Administration The Administration Division encompasses agency leadership, financial control, information technology and public information. Emergency Response The Emergency Response Division focuses on the actual response to emergencies, including coordination of Hazardous Materials and Search and Rescue, by training and supporting response teams throughout the state. Industrial Safety The Industrial Safety Division strives to reduce the potential impact of fire and explosion hazards related to the installation and operation of boilers and the impacts related to the improper installation and/or operation of elevators. Investigation The Fire Investigation Division determines the origin and cause of fires, aiding in the prosecution of arsonists and seeking out new or unknown fire hazards. Prevention The Prevention Division works to reduce accidental fires from the beginning and enforce the Life Safety Code. About the

Assisting in directing the field operations of the Prevention Division of the Kansas State Fire Marshal (KSFM). It includes fire prevention work, enforcing fire and life safety codes, regulations, codes and laws.
Travel:
This position requires a significant amount of travel as part of normally assigned duties, to conduct assigned inspections, and effectively provide supervision to personnel assigned to them. The territory covered by this position includes, but is not limited to, the following Kansas counties: Cheyenne, Rawlins, Decatur, and Norton, and all counties south of that boundary; Rush, Barton, and Ellsworth, and all counties south of that boundary; and Sedgwick, Butler, Sumner, and Cowley. Residency within the territory is preferred; however, this will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following The position provides supervision of statewide staff. Including planning, assigning and evaluating personnel as well as participating in other prevention activities. Supervisors periodically accompany Inspectors during inspection activities to evaluate compliance with Division Directives, completeness and occurrence of inspections and interactions with the regulated community. Since Supervisors and Inspectors work independently, periodic post-inspection evaluations are randomly conducted with facility officials for further feedback on inspection actions. Work involves conducting fire safety surveys of various occupancies, construction areas, analyzing and preparing a report of the results of the surveys and making recommendations to correct deficiencies in fire safety. Assist local fire officials in planning and conducting public fire safety education programs, fire prevention strategies and inspection techniques as well as administering various fire safety programs. Completes paperwork necessary for time accounting, vehicle use and expense reimbursement in accordance with KSFM, Division, and State policies and directives. Participates in periodic staff training events and staff conference calls. These training events provide the employees with increased knowledge of Division Directives, interpretations, operation practices, statutes, Rules and Regulations or adopted national standards. Independently studies Division Directives, Statutes, Rules and Regulations and adopted codes and standards to enhance knowledge and job performance. Assist local authorities in fire prevention matters through participation in statewide fire safety organizations and by routinely providing inspection assistance and liaison to individual local fire departments. Provides liaison to local fire prevention officials on agency policy, inspection techniques and judgement. Completes special assignments and projects when requested to support Division activities and performs other duties as requested. Other duties include, but are not limited to, acting as Division Chief during absences and conducting plan review. Qualifications Education High school diploma or GED Licensing & Certification Valid Kansas Driver's License Fire Inspector I certification through IFSAC or ProBoard (NFPA 1031 2014 Ed.) or Fire Inspector (NFPA 1030 2024 Ed.). Certified with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Must obtain certification as a Fire Plans Examiner within two (2) years. Minimum Qualifications Must be comfortable and tactful in communicating with a wide variety of people. Must be able to effectively operate current technology as it relates to the position. Propper grammar and the ability to draft correspondence addressing multiple issues often of a complex nature. Previous supervisory experience. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of the Kansas Fire Prevention Code and the 2012 National Fire Life Safety Code. Field, code and mechanical aptitude background. Successful applicants would be familiar with KSFM Prevention Division processes, including but not limited to the ability to perform all types of fire inspections.
