Position Summary Responds to medical emergencies and administers life saving measures. Controls and extinguishes fires and engages in search and rescue operations for the preservation of life and property. Maintains apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment and grounds as directed; works under the supervision of the Fire Captain or Lieutenant in accordance with defined procedures. Occasionally, employees in this class may be required to relieve an officer of higher rank and when so assigned, are responsible for the operations of all engine company activities and the supervision of assigned fire companies and equipment at the scene of the fire until relieved of command by an officer of higher rank. • Responds to all fire and emergency medical calls and render immediate, effective, and appropriate medical treatment in accordance with the City of Brentwood Medical Protocols.
• Knows and follows rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the Fire Department.
• May perform duties of Company Officer in his/her absence.
• Maintains thorough knowledge of the geography and streets of the City of Brentwood.
• Responsible for assisting and aiding in firefighting to protect life, property, or the residents of the City of Brentwood.
• Performs fire protection and familiarization inspections of buildings, hydrants, and hoses.
• Participates in training programs and activities.
• Performs general maintenance on all equipment and vehicles, including personal equipment.
• Documents reports and related emergency information in Records Management System (RMS) and Electronic Health Record (EHR), when required and within the scope of Paramedic licensure.
• Positions apparatus, lays and connects hose, raises, and climbs ladders, assists in rescuing persons from hazardous conditions.
• Assists in salvage and overhaul at fire scenes; uses chemical extinguishers, axes, ropes, power tools, hydraulic rescue tools, air bags and other equipment.
• Cleans, services, and returns apparatus and equipment to emergency readiness.
• Drives and operates all department vehicles as qualified.
• Participates in pre-planning fire tactics to improve service and rescue.
• As directed, participates in training classes to maintain, and upgrade knowledge, skills, and certification.
• Performs and works in accordance with all safety policies and procedures, including the protocols for infection control.
• On occasion, may make public presentations, conduct tours of the station, or assist in presenting training classes for other staff, volunteers, community groups, or fire personnel from other agencies. Minimum Requirements - Education, Certification, and Experience
• Must be 21 years old prior to starting date
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Must possess and maintain a valid state of residence driver's license
• Must be certified by the St. Louis County Fire Standards Commission as meeting the requirements of Firefighter (NFPA 1001) Missouri State Firefighter I & II Certificate
• Must possess and maintain as a condition of continued employment, a valid State of Missouri Paramedic license
• Must possess current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card, and successfully complete medical and psychological exams
• Must maintain current

ACLS, PHTLS

(or equivalent), and PALS certifications

• Participate in salvage and overhaul operations; Ability to drive and operate fire engines, ambulances, or other fire apparatus safely and effectively to calls.
• Possess a strong work ethic; and possess demonstrated integrity, tact, and resourcefulness.

Physical:

Work performed primarily in office, vehicles, and outdoor settings, in all work weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night; risk of electrical shock, vibration and conditions of low or no visibility.

Chemical :

Smoke, noxious odors, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils exposures when fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance.

Biological :

Fumes or airborne particles. Working Conditions

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be found.
