Description NOTICE:

In order to be considered for this position, applicants must currently be certified as a law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina or other state in the United States, or have held such certification within the past 10 years. If you are not certified as a law enforcement officer, or have not held such certification, please do not apply for this position. This posting for Deputy Sheriff is a \"continuous posting.\" This means that the Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for this position, even though there may not be any openings at this time. Attempts by you to check the status of your application may prevent you from being considered for future openings. The Deputy Sheriff, under occasional supervision, performs general law enforcement work for the Union County Sheriff's Office; is primarily responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and the general enforcement of criminal laws of North Carolina and for the service of civil processes. Employee must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Employee must also exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in frequent contact with the public. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Essential Job Functions Answers complaint calls, investigates crimes and incidents according to federal law, state law, county ordinances and municipal ordinances. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service to include, but not limited to, domestic violence calls, alarm calls, disturbance calls, 911 hang ups, wanted persons calls, attempt to locate persons for outside agencies, and suspicious persons/vehicles. Performs community policing as practiced and directed by the Sheriff of Union County. Patrols an assigned area of the county, inspects troublesome areas and businesses, both in vehicle and on foot as needed. Patrols the assigned town limits and complies with the contract executed by the town and as directed by the Sheriff of Union County. Displays proficiency in motor vehicle operations and basic map navigation. Gathers intelligence and data that can be used to prevent crime throughout the community. Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects; gathers evidence; prepares cases for court. Performs basic crime scene processing and evidence preservation including, but not limited to, fingerprinting, basic photography, obtaining measurements, documenting crime scenes in written form and through data entry, maintains crime scene security and integrity with physical presence and in maintaining a crime scene log. Enforces traffic laws. Serves legal papers and various criminal and civil processes, using multiple sources to locate designated parties, explains briefly the meaning of papers served and makes arrests and issues citations as necessary. Completes case files to present to the District Attorney's Office for prosecution. Attends any judicial proceedings required by their duties. Draws and executes search warrants. Conducts accident investigations as necessary. Serves as court bailiff and dispatch as necessary. Books inmates in and out of JMS, search inmates, secure personal property, photograph, interview inmates, complete medical, money, and property forms. Provides mental patient, juvenile, and prisoner transportation as directed. Cooperates with other law enforcement officers and other governmental agencies in conducting investigations and arrests. Follows guidelines and procedures as set forth by Sheriff's policies and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:

Requires a high school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED). Bachelor's degree preferred.

Licenses or Certifications:

Possession of the following certificate is required: Basic Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission. If the certificate is not held at time of assignment, it must be obtained within 1 year. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age. Possession of a valid driver's license. Additional Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be physically able to operate different types of law enforcement equipment and tools, safety equipment, firearms, communications equipment, office equipment, etc. Physical demands are in excess of those of sedentary work. Work involves walking, standing, running, climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and jumping for varying periods of time. Must be physically able to occasionally and/or frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects up to fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to move or drag up to one hundred and seventy-five (175) pounds. Must be able to defend one's self from assault and to restrain suspects of varying weights.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a physically threatening environment that requires the employee to make life and death decisions for themselves and others.

All full-time employees and their eligible dependents can participate on the first day of the first full month of employment. You must sign up for coverage within your first 30 days of employment or wait until the annual enrollment period. LIFE INSURANCE

Basic Term life Insurance in the amount of one times the annual salary is provided for all full-time and benefitted part-time employees. Additional coverage for Life Insurance (Accident, Cancer, Long Term and Short Term) is available for purchase through payroll deduction for the employee and eligible dependents.

FINANCIAL PROGRAMS RETIREMENT

Membership in the North Carolina Local Government Employees Retirement System is a requirement for all full-time and benefitted part-time employees. Employees contribute six percent (6%) of their annual compensation before it is taxed. If you leave County service before retirement, you may withdraw your retirement contributions or elect to freeze your contributions in anticipation of future local government employment. (k) The NC401(k) supplemental retirement program is available to full-time and benefitted part-time employees. The County establishes this 401(k) account for each eligible employee and makes a five percent (5%) contribution based on biweekly earnings. COMPENSATION

The 457 Deferred Compensation program is available to all employees through payroll deduction. Deferred compensation is a voluntary investment plan to supplement retirement income and to defer taxable income.

LEAVE PROGRAMS VACATION LEAVE

Vacation leave is accrued based on creditable years of service in the Local Government Employees Retirement System.

SICK LEAVE

For full-time County employees, sick leave accrues at eight (8.0) hours per month. Benefitted part-time employees accrue prorated sick leave based on a percentage of the full-time rate. Your unused sick leave balance can be applied as creditable service toward a service retirement under the guidelines of the

NCLGERS. SICK LEAVE TRANSFER FROM OTHER AGENCIES

Unused sick leave earned from another North Carolina Governmental Agency and/or entity, will be accepted and transferred to the County as follows: twelve (12) sick leave days will be transferred and added to the employees active sick leave balance after completion of six (6) months of employment. The remaining balance of sick leave documented for transfer at the time of employment will be recorded in the employees permanent personnel file. On the fifth anniversary of employment with the County, the remaining balance of transferred sick leave will be added to the employees active sick leave balance.

HOLIDAYS

There are 12 County recognized holidays per year with 1 floating holiday available.

MILITARY LEAVE

Annual Training - 10 paid workdays granted. Active Duty - 20 paid workdays granted.

CIVIL LEAVE

Paid leave is provided to full-time or regular part-time County employees called for jury duty or as a witness of the court for the federal or state government, or a subdivision thereof.

FAMILY & MEDICAL LEAVE ACT

Federal law provides job protection and continuation of existing paid health insurance during 12 weeks of leave, paid or unpaid, to an eligible employee for qualifying events. These events can include birth or adoption, and serious illness of an immediate family member, or of the employee.

PAID PARENTAL LEAVE

Parental Leave provides the employee paid leave for the first eight weeks of approved FML for the birth of a son or daughter, or placement with the employee of a son or daughter for adoption or foster care.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE

Educational Leave is available to regular full-time and benefitted part-time employees when participating in a job-related, short course, such as an update, not to exceed ten (10) consecutive working days.

VOLUNTEER TIME OFF

Volunteer Time Off will provide employees with 16 hours of paid time per calendar year to volunteer at approved Union County community partner agencies.

OTHER PROGRAMS EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Employee Assistance Program is open to all employees and their dependents. It is a confidential service provided at no cost to the employees of the County. EAP provides certified counselors who administer assessment and brief therapy to employees who want help with a variety of personal and work-related issues such as stress, parenting concerns, grief, alcohol/drug use, family problems, financial concerns, and work-related problems.

AQUATIC AND FITNESS CENTER

We believe that staying healthy is more than just exercising regularly and eating well. Individual and family discount membership and monthly dues are available to full-time and benefitted part-time employees through payroll deduction.

NATIONAL COLLEGE SAVINGS PROGRAM

The National College Savings Program is open to all employees.
