GENERAL SUMMARY

Provides responsible law enforcement services and supervision that fulfill the mission and specific purposes of the department and City. As a first-line supervisory position within the Police Department, this position will be expected to be a leader, contributing to the improvement and development of the organization and City.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

This position reports to the supervisor responsible for the area of assignment. This position supervises personnel assigned to the Sergeant's area of responsibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Provides excellent service and protection to all members of the Lake Worth Community, including City staff, the general public, and all other work contacts. Afford all citizens highly efficient and professional protection and services Promote an attitude of friendliness, helpfulness, tact, understanding and caring in the performance of assigned duties Communicate cooperatively and openly with the community Communicate openly within the organization; be a team player and offer mutual support to facilitate the accomplishment of higher goals of community protection and service over individual accomplishments. This same spirit of inter-organizational cooperation is carried further to cooperate with other law enforcement agencies and other governmental units. Provides effective control and coordination of resources and activities within the shift or division to which assigned. Patrols public roadways to promote traffic safety and enhance the quality of life throughout the community. Investigates crime and pursues leads to promote safety and enhance the quality of life throughout the community. Promotes a positive image in performing community-policing duties. Provides a high level of supervision, training, and direction, and is competent in meeting all facets of the essential duties and responsibilities of a Police Officer as defined in the Police Officer job description. Performs continual inspections of operational and administrative functions and activities to identify inefficient and ineffective processes and provides workable solutions. Coordinates activities with subordinates and other departmental personnel to ensure consistency in interpretation and implementation of administrative orders, City ordinances, policies, procedures, and laws. Develops the knowledge, skills, and abilities of subordinates to enhance their probability of success. Researches current police officer, law enforcement, and supervisory practices, techniques, and methods for developing lesson plans, providing continual training, directing subordinates, and/or providing other daily direction, supervision, and training. Adheres to personnel, departmental, and safety policies, procedures, and administrative orders. Conducts summary disciplinary investigations and provides coaching, counseling, and training as needed. Informs supervisor of all work activities. Performs other duties which may be specific to division or specialize assignment. Should a sergeant be assigned to a specialized unit or transferred to another division, those specific duties will be discussed in detail by their supervisor and documented accordingly. Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Patrol Sergeant:

Minimum requirements for Police Officer, AND Minimum of three years of post-field training law enforcement experience

Criminal Investigations and Administrative Sergeant:

Meet the minimum requirements for Sergeant, AND A minimum of two years of first-line supervisory experience, preferably with the Lake Worth Police Department

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Valid Class C Texas driver license; valid TCOLE Intermediate or higher Peace Officer Certification preferred

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Must possess the visual acuity to operate a computer terminal and city vehicle Walk, stand, sit, or run for prolonged periods of time Regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry up 10 pounds Frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds Occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 100 pounds or more Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist Operate office equipment including use of a computer keyboard Speak and hear to exchange information in English Operate a vehicle to travel to various locations Operate and use specialized law enforcement tools and equipment including guns and handcuffs Restrain or subdue individuals The City of Lake Worth is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
