Job Summary This position ensures the safety and security of courtroom operations, staff, and visitors at the Door County Justice Center. Operating under the general oversight of the Sheriff's Office leadership and directly reporting to the Field Services Lieutenant, the role provides essential law enforcement and courtroom security services, including inmate transport and support of judicial operations. As an on-call position, it demands a high degree of availability, preparedness, and adherence to professional standards. Essential Duties & Responsibilities 1. Monitors and controls access to the Justice Center by processing individuals at security checkpoints and inspecting for weapons as per department procedures. 2. Provides courtroom security through calendar coordination, environmental inspections, and direct oversight of proceedings. 3. Escorts and secures inmates appearing in court from both the Door County Jail and external facilities. 4. Completes documentation and maintains records associated with courtroom appearances and security protocols. 5. Participates in specialty unit activities or training, performing assigned duties related to such units. 6. Executes law enforcement responsibilities, such as arresting suspects, directing traffic, and public event security, as assigned and within certification limits. 7. Collaborates with interagency partners, prosecutors, and legal staff to support procedural compliance and case management. 8. Applies departmental policies and state statutes to routine and emergent situations, exercising sound judgment and discretion.

Technical Proficiency:

Operates security equipment such as magnetometers and x-ray machines, in addition to standard office tools.

Legal Interpretation:

Understands and applies court orders, legal terminology, and statutory requirements accurately. Required Education & Experience High School diploma or equivalent. Valid driver's license. Formal training in law enforcement or corrections, or a combination of both. Preferred Education & Experience Wisconsin Law Enforcement certification, eligibility for certification, or enrollment in an accredited criminal justice program with anticipated certification within six months. Sixty (60) college credits in criminal justice, police science, or a related field. Physical & Work Environment Requirements The role requires frequent sitting and talking, with occasional walking, standing, climbing, balancing, and lifting (up to 60 pounds). Tasks demand fine motor skills, visual acuity, and alertness for recognizing safety threats or behavioral cues. Work may involve variable environments, including courtroom, jail, and external transport settings, and may expose the deputy to physical risk or stressful conditions. Flexibility, both physical and schedule-based, is essential.
