The Town of Prescott Valley Police Department is seeking experienced, retired Arizona peace officers to fill two newly approved, grant-funded Retried School Resource Officer (RSRO) positions through the Arizona School Safety Program. This is a unique opportunity to continue serving your community while helping create safe, supportive, and effective learning environments for students and school staff. As a Retired School Resource Officer, you will bring your law enforcement experience into a role that goes well beyond school safety. You will serve as a law enforcement professional, educator, mentor, role model, and trusted member of the school safety team, building positive relationships with students, staff, families, and the community. The Retired Arizona Police Officer - School Resource Officer (RSRO) is a term limited, grant funded position. Funding is granted one year at a time. The Retired Arizona Police Officer - School Resource Officer (SRO) supports safe and effective learning environments at Town approved school site(s) in Prescott Valley. The position is intended for an individual previously employed as a peace officer in Arizona who retired in good standing and is assigned by PVPD to participate in the Arizona School Safety Program. The RSRO serves as a law-enforcement professional, law-related educator, mentor/role model, and member of the school safety team, while maintaining PVPD chain-of-command accountability and complying with applicable grant, training, reporting, and service-agreement requirements. Examples of Duties Provide a visible safety presence at assigned campus(es), including school grounds, buildings, common areas, parking areas, arrival/dismissal locations, and school events as assigned. Respond to school-related criminal and non-criminal incidents, emergencies, threats, safety concerns, and calls for assistance consistent with PVPD policy and school-safety program requirements. Enforce Arizona law and Town ordinances when appropriate; detain, arrest, cite, and prepare reports consistent with law, policy, and the officer's authority. Support campus emergency planning, emergency drills, safety assessments, threat-assessment processes, and coordination with school administrators, PVPD, fire, EMS, and other partners. Serve as a member of the school safety program team and participate in regular school safety meetings, data review, prevention planning, intervention strategies, and program evaluation. Deliver law-related education (LRE) and prevention-focused instruction aligned to student age, school needs, and grant requirements, including topics such as school safety, effective citizenship, bullying prevention, decision-making, substance awareness, cyber safety, traffic safety, and legal awareness. Maintain required activity logs, including LRE hours, classroom/staff/community instruction, assigned-campus time, and time away from campus when required by grant guidance or PVPD procedures. Build positive relationships with students, staff, families, and the school community while maintaining clear boundaries between school discipline and law enforcement responsibilities. Assist with traffic and safety issues around assigned schools as directed, including school-zone safety, parking-lot safety, and arrival/dismissal coordination. Prepare complete and accurate reports, documentation, statements, and testimony related to school-based incidents or investigations. Maintain required certifications, qualifications, training, equipment proficiency, and readiness for emergency response Typical Qualification Minimum Qualifications Previously employed as a peace officer in Arizona and retired in good standing, consistent with the School Safety Program definition of SRO. Current Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) certification or ability to regain/maintain certification before employment start date, as determined by PVPD. Valid Arizona driver license and acceptable driving record. Ability to pass all PVPD/Town pre-employment requirements applicable to a sworn or law-enforcement position, including background screening and any other process required by the Town. Ability to obtain and maintain first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED), and naloxone/Narcan training or certifications. Ability to safely perform school-based law-enforcement duties, respond to emergencies, communicate effectively, and work with youth, school staff, families, and community partners. Preferred Qualifications Prior service as an SRO or direct experience working with youth in an educational setting. Training or documented experience in school safety, adolescent mental health, crisis intervention, trauma-informed practices, restorative practices, conflict resolution, or de-escalation. Experience delivering presentations, classroom instruction, or prevention education. Demonstrated history of building trust with students, families, schools, and diverse communities. Experience preparing detailed law-enforcement reports, legal documentation, and court testimony. Supplemental Information Work Schedule and Assignment Notes Schedule will be aligned to the assigned school calendar and school operational needs. During summer break the officer will be assigned to a non-enforcement role. The RSRO should serve only the school site(s) awarded funding, except in a crisis or as otherwise permitted by the grant/service agreement. Except for summer break, when school is not in session, work should be coordinated between the SRO Sergeant and school administration to support training, safety planning, LRE preparation, school events, drills, policy/procedure work, or other grant-compliant duties. School discipline remains the responsibility of school administration. The RSRO becomes involved when conduct presents a safety issue, violates law, supports prevention/intervention, or is otherwise within the RSRO role approved by the grant/service agreement.
