Position Title:
School Safety Officer/Campus Enforcement Officer Position Type:
Non-exempt
Reports To:
Chief of Police and Deputy Superintendent Primary Function:
The School Safety Officer (SSO) is assigned routine duties of safety and physical security under the supervision of a School Resource Officer, Campus Enforcement Officer, or school administrator. The SSO does not have authority to carry a weapon or make arrests. The SSO conducts routine patrols, secures buildings, and checks for safety hazards
Minimum Qualifications:
An earned High School Diploma or equivalent.
Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
Experience security, law enforcement, military service, emergency management, or working with youth preferred.
Physical fitness sufficient for patrols and emergency response.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to handle effectively and courteously with associates, students, and the public.
Must be available for professional development, as needed.
Must have a satisfactory criminal background screening and child abuse registry check.
Minimum Training Standards:
Completion of the MDE School Safety Officer Basic Course
Forty (40) hours of MDE sanctioned in-service training per year.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Mans assigned shifts and areas of patrol. Maintains constant contact with Chief of Police and school administration. 2. Maintains a check on persons and vehicles entering and leaving school property and keeps a record of calls/incidents relative to security issues. 3. Remains alert for suspect and/or hazardous conditions. 4. Implementation of an emergency action plan, as necessary. 5. Prepares written reports for the Chief of Police on any incident of personal injury, accident, or damaged property. 6. Participates in in-service training programs for security staff, concentrating on investigative detection, self-protection, and related techniques. 7. Submits to evaluation of security personnel and of routine security procedures. 8. Performs additional duties as assigned and directed by the Chief of Police, Deputy Superintendent or Superintendent.
