POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

An employee in this class is responsible for protecting the life and property of all citizens and visitors to the Municipality through the impartial enforcement of all State and Municipal laws and ordinances, by performing a variety of skilled operational police work; does related work as required. Police Officers are usually assigned to an area to be routinely patrolled, but encounter a wide variety of situations and tasks which must be met with considerable self-initiative and good judgment. The work may at times involve considerable physical and mental stress. In addition to routine patrol assignments, Police Officers may receive special instructions and supervision from a shift commander or other ranking officers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Patrols an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle and observes or investigates unusual incidents or violations of the law. Checks doors, windows, and examines the premises of unoccupied businesses or residences. Makes arrests of persons who are suspects in a criminal offense and accompanies prisoners to headquarters or court. Regulates and controls traffic; issues citations for various offenses and assists motorists in accidents or other difficulties. Identifies and makes recommendations for correcting various traffic and safety hazards. Answers domestic complaints; breaks up fights, handles intoxicated individuals, settles family disputes, and quiets disturbances of the peace. Prepares daily incident and other administrative reports of the department. Operates and maintains firearms, police radio, patrol cars, and uniform. Assists with crowd control at fires, accidents, parades and other public gatherings. Provides escorts for bank deposits and funerals. Makes appearances in court on behalf of the Municipality when cases involve the Officer. Informs the public of State and Municipal laws and ordinances.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

This is entry level work. While training at a police academy is provided, the prospective employee should possess the following capabilities: The ability to learn and enforce State and Municipal laws and ordinances; Ability to learn all Police Department policies and procedures as prescribed in the police manual; Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; Ability to think quickly and exercise good judgment in stressful situations; Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with public agencies, judicial system officers, police associates and the general public.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a variety of environmental conditions which may include: an indoor office environment, operating a patrol vehicle, or a changing outdoor environment. Officers may be exposed to very hot or sub-zero temperatures, rain, snow, wind or icy conditions. Exposure to various chemicals and blood borne pathogens may also occur while assisting with vehicle accidents or exposure to infected individuals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

(VERY HEAVY) May require sitting while operating a vehicle or walking for up to an entire shift. Although some of the work is sedentary in nature, officers may be required to quite suddenly respond to an emergency situation.

This may require:

Running on uneven terrain; Restraining combatant individuals; Heavy lifting or carrying; pushing and pulling; Climbing and balancing on stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, hillsides, structural barriers or fences; Full range of body motion to twist, crouch, crawl, bend, kneel and reach; manual dexterity to operate firearms, radios and other equipment; Operation of a motor vehicle; and normal corrected vision and hearing. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

You must be at least twenty-one (21) years old before the date of the first administered test. You must possess a diploma from an accredited high school or a graduate equivalency diploma (GED), as approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. You are not required to be Act 120 Certified , but if you are not Act 120 certified at the time of application, you must achieve Act 120 certification, after being hired, which is contingent upon successfully completing Act 120 training through a police academy recognized by the Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) 53 Pa. C.S.A. §2161 et seq.

The employee must have successfully completed the Civil Service Examination and been certified by the Municipal Civil Service Board. The employee should also possess a valid PA Driver's License.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Following appointment, the employee must be certified by the Commonwealth of PA to use the

C.L.E.A.N. /N.C.I.C.

System. Certification and access to the

C.L.E.A.N. /N.I.C.

System or similar systems is an essential condition of employment which must be maintained by every sworn police officer.

$39.34 per hour
