Assistant Safety Director

Job Description

Pay Summary $50,000-$65,000 per year, based on previous experience and qualifications. Position Summary Horizon Transport is seeking an experienced transportation safety and compliance professional to serve as Assistant Safety Director. Reporting to the Vice President of Risk Management, this hands-on position helps oversee
DOT/FMCSA
compliance, driver training, accident response, and safety performance for approximately 1,400 independent contractor drivers. Horizon has been a 100% employee-owned ESOP company since 2023 . When you join Horizon, you're not just an employee—you're an owner. Primary Responsibilities Monitor compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and state transportation regulations. Maintain and audit driver qualification files, ELD data, Hours-of-Service reports, vehicle records, and accident documentation. Review log violations, DOT inspections, CSA performance, safety KPIs, and accident trends. Communicate with drivers regarding violations, retraining, corrective actions, accidents, damages, and other compliance matters. Assist with DOT audits, compliance reviews, investigations, and corrective-action plans. Investigate accidents, injuries, damages, and near misses; prepare reports and recommend preventive measures. Conduct compliance inspections of contractor trucks and equipment as needed. Develop and lead driver orientation, Safety School, logging classes, recurring safety training, and
S.M.A.R.T.
simulator courses. Work with Operations and Human Resources on driver coaching, retraining, disciplinary action, assignment blocks, and lease terminations involving serious safety concerns. Maintain the contractor handbook, safety policies, training records, and required documentation. Guide safety coordinators, driver trainers, and support personnel as assigned. Serve as backup to the Safety Director and participate in the emergency after-hours call rotation. Respond to current safety-related emails and voicemails by the end of each business day. Qualifications At least two years of trucking safety, DOT compliance, fleet compliance, or transportation risk-management experience. Working knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations. Experience with driver qualification files, ELD and HOS compliance, DOT inspections, CSA data, accident investigations, or driver training. Strong judgment, organization, documentation, and communication skills. Ability to handle difficult driver conversations professionally and consistently. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities. Availability to work full-time on-site in Wakarusa and participate in an after-hours rotation.
A CDL, NATMI
certification, driver-training experience, or previous experience with an RV transportation or independent-contractor fleet is preferred.
