Start YOUR career with DHL today… The Senior Safety Manager for DHL Express US provides strategic leadership, governance, and operational coordination for occupational health and safety across DHL Express operations in the United States. This role partners with senior leaders, operational management, and Safety teams to develop and execute the US safety strategy, strengthen safety culture, ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements, and deliver sustainable improvements in risk management and operational performance. This role leads and develops a team of safety professionals, coordinates safety activity across a multi-site network, and ensures US priorities remain aligned with regional and global Safety-First objectives. How will you contribute to the success of DHL? Serve as the principal safety advisor to US Operational leadership, influencing operational and business decisions so that safety is embedded across the United States network. Executes the US strategic safety vision, priorities, and annual operating plan in alignment with Americas and global Safety-First objectives and business priorities. Lead the governance, deployment, and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System across US operations, driving consistent standards, sustainable risk reduction, and operational excellence. Coordinate operational safety activities across US gateways, service centers, and support functions to ensure aligned priorities, clear ownership, and consistent execution. Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of safety professionals, setting clear expectations and strengthening technical capability, leadership effectiveness, accountability, succession planning, and career development. Champion implementation and advancement of the OHS Policy across US operations, ensuring initiatives produce measurable operational, cultural, and risk-reduction outcomes. Build a proactive Safety culture through visible leadership, employee participation, effective consultation, and clear accountability at every level of the US organization. Provide tactical oversight of US compliance programs, including applicable OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, EPA, state, and local requirements, while ensuring alignment with DHL corporate standards. Use safety performance data, leading and lagging indicators, trend analysis, and operational insights to identify emerging risks, guide leadership decisions, and prioritize US risk-reduction activity. Govern operational risk assessment processes and ensure safety-by-design principles are integrated into operational change, new facilities, equipment, automation, technology, and capital projects across the US network.   • and critical-risk-reduction initiatives across US operations, ensuring effective implementation, verification, and sharing of lessons learned.
Direct or support investigations of incidents ensuring robust root cause analysis, sustainable corrective action, timely escalation, and organizational learning. Monitor US performance measures, reporting routines, governance reviews, and action-tracking mechanisms that strengthen accountability and continuous improvement across the network. Represent US Safety with business leaders, regulatory agencies, industry stakeholders, emergency services, and external partners, protecting DHL's reputation and advancing strategic safety objectives. Lead US emergency preparedness and operational resilience strategies, coordinating with relevant functions to strengthen response readiness and business continuity during major events. Oversee audit readiness, compliance assurance, and management review processes for US operations, supporting applicable corporate and externally recognized safety standards. Promote innovation across US Safety by evaluating emerging risks, technology, data solutions, and industry practices that can improve operational control and employee protection.
Accountabilities & Key Tasks:
Lead execution of the US safety strategy and annual plan, translating regional and global priorities into clear operational objectives, deliverables, and measures. Provide leadership and guidance to the US Senior Management Team on occupational health and safety, operational risk, regulatory compliance, and organizational resilience. Direct implementation and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System across US operations, with consistent governance, assurance, and performance expectations. Lead and coordinate the US safety team, including resource planning, work allocation, team routines, technical guidance, performance expectations, and consistent support to operational leaders. Build Field Safety team capability through coaching, mentoring, development plans, knowledge sharing, succession planning, and targeted technical and leadership development. Coordinate national operational safety programs and campaigns, ensuring effective planning, communication, deployment, local adoption, progress monitoring, and escalation of barriers. Lead identification, assessment, and mitigation of key USA operational risks, with particular focus on serious injury and fatality prevention, critical controls, transportation, material handling, facilities, and employee activities. Analyze safety data, operational trends, and emerging risks to provide actionable insights, prioritize interventions, and influence US business decisions. Oversee serious-incident and significant-event investigations, ensuring legal and corporate reporting requirements, quality root cause analysis, cross-network learning, and closure of sustainable corrective actions. Partner with Operations, Aviation, Engineering, HR, Security, Real Estate, Procurement, and other functions to integrate safety into planning, change management, operational execution, and network improvement. Provide reporting on US safety performance, priority risks, regulatory exposure, serious incidents, program delivery, resource needs, and required leadership actions. Support US emergency preparedness, crisis support, and business continuity safety activities, clarifying roles and coordinating readiness across locations and functions. Maintain effective relationships with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, industry associations, emergency services, occupational health providers, and other external stakeholders. Drive standardization, innovation, and continuous improvement by sharing best practices across the US network and connecting US learning with Americas and global Safety teams. Do you have what it takes? Typically requires BS/BA in related discipline or 8+ years of experience in related field Minimum of 3 years of progressive safety leadership experience, including responsibility for a safety management system and experience leading safety professionals or a geographically dispersed team. Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field is preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered. Current or progressing toward a recognized safety credential is preferred, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or equivalent. Experience in logistics, transportation, aviation, warehousing, material handling, or time-critical operational environments is strongly preferred. Experience providing tactical safety oversight across a large, multi-site, or geographically dispersed US operation. Working knowledge of applicable US occupational safety, transportation, environmental, reporting, and recordkeeping requirements, with experience managing compliance reviews and regulatory interactions. Demonstrated leadership capability with confidence, judgment, energy, and personal accountability to influence senior leaders and lead a geographically dispersed safety function. Strong people-leadership, coaching, training, analytical, change-management, and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to develop team capability. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing safety strategies, management systems, operational programs, and improvement plans across complex operations. Demonstrated ownership, sound judgment, collaboration, and a practical, solutions-oriented approach to operational safety challenges. Travel approximately 50%.
