The Field Safety Supervisor is responsible for promoting and enforcing a strong safety culture across all company terminals and driver operations. This role conducts on-site safety audits, driver observations, accident investigations, and compliance reviews to ensure adherence to FMCSA regulations, company safety policies, and DOT standards. The Field Safety Supervisor serves as the primary safety point of contact for drivers and operations staff in the field. On-Call Responsibilities:
This role participates in a team-based, 24/7 on-call rotation to support our Incident Reporting call line. You will be responsible for completing 2 week on-call rotations during which you will act as the primary responder for urgent 24-hour incident reports. Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses in the field; gather evidence, interview drivers/witnesses, and prepare detailed reports Monitor driver compliance with Hours of Service (HOS), CSA/SMS BASIC categories, and company safety policies Deliver in-person and virtual safety training, including new driver orientation, defensive driving, hazmat awareness, and post-accident retraining Perform roadside and pre-trip/post-trip inspection spot checks to ensure DOT compliance (CFR 49) Partner with terminal managers and dispatch to address recurring safety trends and unsafe conditions Support the DOT drug and alcohol testing program, including random selection oversight and reasonable suspicion documentation, as needed Review and coach on driver qualification file completeness during field visits Track corrective action plans and follow up to confirm resolution Represent the company professionally during DOT audits, roadside inspections, and law enforcement interactions Maintain accurate records of all field visits, coaching sessions, and investigations in the safety management system Travel to company terminals, driver locations, and accident/incident sites as needed, including on short notice Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Safety, Transportation, or related field preferred Minimum 2-4 years of verifiable experience in transportation safety, fleet operations, and DOT compliance Working knowledge of FMCSA regulations, CFR 49, CSA/SMS scoring, and Hours of Service rules Valid DOT medical certificate required Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred Strong investigative, written, and verbal communication skills Proficiency with safety management software, telematics/ELD systems, and Microsoft Office Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and manage multiple priorities in the field Physical and Travel Requirements Travel is mandatory as needed, including overnight and multi-day trips to terminals, driver locations, and incident sites Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around active trucking/yard operations Ability to climb into/out of tractor-trailer cabs for inspections and ride-alongs Availability for after-hours or weekend response in the event of a serious accident or incident Preferred Qualifications Experience with hazmat compliance and fleet safety programs Prior experience presenting findings during DOT compliance reviews •This job description is intended to convey information essential to understanding the scope of the position and is not an exhaustive list of skills, duties, or responsibilities.
