This position develops, implements, and leads the company's safety programs while independently auditing conformance of Sturdisteel's fabrication processes to the Quality Management System (PMS), AISC Certification Program requirements, AWS standards, and applicable contract documents. They evaluate products and process quality and carry authority to stop or modify any operation considered unsafe. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Safety Director Functions Develop, implement, and maintain Sturdisteel's written safety programs and Code of Safe Practices, and update them as regulations, equipment, or operations change. Act as a resource to supervisors and Production Managers in developing department-specific safe work procedures. Coordinate and deliver required safety training and maintain training records. Organize and lead regular Safety Committee meetings; document findings and corrective actions. Conduct frequent, documented inspections of the workplace, materials, and equipment to identify and correct hazards. Hold authority to stop or modify unsafe operations, in coordination with management. Investigate all reported injuries, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions. Maintain OSHA recordkeeping and ensure timely reporting of serious injuries to OSHA or applicable jurisdiction. Oversee the PPE program, including provisioning, training on proper use/maintenance, and compliance monitoring. Partner with Human Resources on safety-related disciplinary matters, worker's compensation coordination, and return-to-work/light-duty planning. Maintain emergency communication and response procedures for the facility. Maintain Stormwater run-off permits and testing as necessary. Scheduling yearly inspections as needed to maintain OSHA compliance. Schedule yearly OSHCON visits to help in the identification of unsafe practices and conditions. Conduct on-site annual audiometric testing in accordance with our Hearing Protection Plan. Quality Auditor Functions Serve as the company's Quality Auditor under the AISC-based Quality Management System, monitoring compliance with documented QMS procedures, contract documents, referenced standards (AWS, ASTM, RCSC), and customer requirements. Establish and oversee the plan for monitoring quality, including assignment and oversight of quality control inspection activities performed with production. Determine quality and acceptance criteria in accordance with project specifications and governing codes. Determine quality control personnel qualification requirements. Conduct periodic, documented audits of process and product nonconformances, tracking both frequency and severity, and drive corrective actions to resolution. Participate in the annual quality management system review and support
AISC/QMC
on-site certification audits, including corrective action follow-up on auditor findings. Summarize and report quality conformance measures, nonconformance trends, and corrective action effectiveness to executive management and the QMT. Maintain quality control records and QMS documentation in accordance with the company's record retention policy. Escalate unresolved quality issues through the Plant Manager and the President when necessary. Review customer feedback in coordination with the Plant Manger to identify recurring quality issues and improvement opportunities. Supervisory Responsibilities This position does not require any supervisory responsibilities. Minimum Education, Skills, and Requirements Must currently be eligible to work in the United States of America. High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial or manufacturing safety, with structural steel, metal fabrication, or heavy manufacturing experience strongly preferred. Familiarity with AWS welding standards and structural steel fabrication a plus. Experience with OSHA recordkeeping and accident investigations. OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification. Working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards, AISC Certification Program requirements, and
AWS D1.1
structural welding code preferred. Strong documentation, investigative, and root-cause analysis skills. Preferred Education and Experience Prior quality assurance/quality control experience in a certified manufacturing environment preferred. Welding certification.
OSHA 511/501
(Trainer) preferred. OSHA CSP, ASP, or ASQ preferred. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to lift up to 80 lbs. This job requires frequent repetitive motion and may, at times, require bending, stooping, crawling, twisting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and pulling. The employee must have good hand and eye coordination and needs good upper body strength and lower back strength. Finger Dexterity and Visual Acuity are required, since the worker will be handling small parts. Verbal Communication is important, so employees must be able to hear and speak.
